Android and iOS book reader app that shares progress

Does such an application exist?

95% of my reading is done via my archos tablet(android) but I also like to read on my iPod when I'm stuck somewhere

I use stanza in iOS and aldiko with android. I am perfectly satisfied with each standalone, but I would love to have a reader that shared reading progress for each title

I've got a huge collection of ebooks, mostly .lit stuff that I convert to ePub so it needs to be an app that accepts generic ePub

The Kindle app does that, but it won't accept ePub. Have you tried the Kobo app? I'm not sure if it'll sync (or even use) ePub, but the Kobo readers do work with ePub files.

Use Calibre to convert lit to mobi which the Kindle accepts.

for some reason, I was under the impression the kindle app would only sync kindle purchases, not books you imported

I'd be happy to be disabused of this notion tho!

I know the Kindle app won't. Not sure about the Kobo.
