Thumbs up Rogers iPhone 3.0 and Tethering

New feature with iPhone 3.0

Quote:
New features such as tethering and Picture Messaging (MMS) now available when you upgrade to iPhone O.S. 3.0.

Tethering is the use of your phone as a wireless modem to connect to the Internet from your computer. For a limited time, if you subscribe to a data plan which includes at least 1GB of data transmission between June 8, 2009 and December 31, 2009, you may use tethering as part of the volume of data included in your plan at no additional charge. Tethering cannot be used with data plans of less than 1GB. To upgrade to a 1GB iPhone data plan call 1-888-ROGERS1

Also send photos, contacts, audio files, and location via Picture Messaging (MMS). To get Picture Messaging, upgrade to new iPhone Value Packs with unlimited Picture Messaging by going to
I might finally start using some of the 6GB monthly plan I have

I'm happy to read that Rogers is allowing tethering on the iPhone in Canada. According to another forum, users need to contact Rogers to have a code added that authorizes tethering, but that's it and users are clear to go.

This seems to be a major breakthrough in term of charging for data in Canada. I would gladly trade my unlimited/no tethering plan with Telus for a 6GB "bucket" which I could use on the phone or notebook. It's how it should be. When I buy electricity it doesn't matter if I use it for light, heat or to power a roomful of technology. Wireless data is the same regardless of the device it's sent to/from.

Now to see how the other providers respond.

Just the fact that Rogers is allowing this and NOT AT&T speaks volumes. Unfortunately most people would have to re-sign their data contract since anyone with a data value pack will only have 500MB of data. I got the $30 Iphone data value pack before they changed the price to $35 so I won't be changing.

Lost access to our Exchange email server after the update but a reboot fixed it.

Nice to see it's finally out, I am doing the same thing right now. One would think it would be released at 12:01AM ET though...

Exclamation

Just called Fido to activate tethering. Checked with technical support and it won't be available until Friday, June 19th.

EDIT: Tethering is fully operational (I'm writing this while tethered to my laptop). Originally in the Settings under Tethering, it said something like "Please contact Fido to activate tethering". An hour later, that alert is gone and tethering instructions are present.

Had a weird glitch during installation where iTunes asked me to disconnect the iPhone, enter my PIN, and reconnect the phone. Weird thing was - the text was both in Russian and Italian (I think!)

Just playing with the other features now.

Cut, copy, paste is brilliant. Even a fumble fingers like me can do it pretty quickly.

I updated and think it installed. Got some weird emergency icon and itunes icon. Rebooted the phone and Mac. Reconnected. Opened itunes and while trying to access itunes store I get this message, "error whilte accessing itunes store, error (-4)"

Anyone know what this is?

Maybe too busy?

You might not be eligible for the new iPhone

From Rogers FAQ:

Quote:
How long do I have to be with Rogers before I can get an upgrade?

If you are a Rogers Wireless customer currently using a Smartphone on 1) a Data plan or 2) Voice & Data bundled plan and you wish to upgrade to a new Smartphone, you are eligible to upgrade after 24 months. For customers with only Voice service (no Data plan) wishing to upgrade to a Smartphone or customers upgrading from a non-Smartphone to a Smartphone or Data device, you are eligible to upgrade after 12 months. Your account must also be in good credit standing at the time of the upgrade.

Note: A Smartphone is a handheld Data device such as a Blackberry or iPhone.
