Canadian IPTV Regulation

Hi Everyone,

I've been googling and trying to find this out, but i can't find a good answer, maybe someone here knows.

I'm wondering to what extent (if at all) the CRTC regulations IPTV (over say DSL or fiber) in Canada. There are no direct linkages in the Broadcasting Act, or in the Telecommunications Act that i can find either.

Is it still un-regulated in Canada?

Thanks!

Telus, Aliant, Sasktel and MTS IPTV services are all governed by the CRTC.

To my knowledge, video delivered over the internet, where you get video clips or maybe some foreign channel streams in a web browser window or via a computer software program on your computer is not.

Hi Hugh,

Thanks for the reply. I wasn't sure if it might fall under the CRTC's "new media" regulations or not, but i guess not.

Well that could all change after the "new media" regulations come into effect!

For all practical purposes, IPTV providers such as MTS, Telus, Aliant, and others, are regulated the same as a cable provider, since that is essentially what they are to the customer and the channels.

The "new media" is web video, such as Youtube and video podcasts.
