I'm afraid you're mistaken. The 8642 certainly does output audio over HDMI.

Of course the 8642 outputs audio over HDMI, I am saying I don't have the option for some reason.

Have you tried a cold reboot? There are other tips in the following FAQ.

Installed an 8642 160GB yesterday (replaced an old SD PVR). FW is SARA 1.92.11.1 (02/03/10). I found that out after it crashed in the program guide. The old 8300 never did that.

Other than the crash everything seems OK so far.

I suspect that HD picture quality is slightly improved over the 8300. I'm not seeing as much compression artifacting, esp mosquito noise, and the picture looks less blocky & more detailed. Does this box have better VP circuitry built in, maybe a denoising circuit or better mp2 decoder?

OTOH I could be imagining that.

EDIT:

One thing I'm pretty sure of -- the contrast is set higher than on my 8300. (I think the contrast setting is fixed, I don't know any way to tweak it.)

You cannot tweak the contrast on the PVR. It has to be done on the TV. Many TV's retain separate configurations for each input. If this is the case with yours then just adjust the contrast to suit the 8642. You can do this by sight or get a test pattern recorded on your HDD and perform a simple alignment. HDNET used to broadcast a test pattern, so do a search to see if you find out the broadcast time, assuming that you subscribe to that channel.

Yes, contrast seems to be nonadjustable on both 8300 and 8642. The default contrast on the 8642 seems to be set slightly higher than that of the 8300. That's all I said.

External Storage

I recently picked up a couple of 8642's for rent to replace my 8300 rentals. Since I have the 160gb models, I would like to expand the recording capacity. Rogers offers a 1TB PVR Extender for $250, which appears expensive to me for an external hard drive. I was wondering if anyone in this forum knows whether I can simply buy any eSATA external drive or if I am limited to the $250 version offered by Rogers. If you can use others, would you kindly share your experiences and let me know which drives you have successfully tested this with?
Thanks.

Signal breaks for 2 seconds

I'm also experiencing a signal loss for a couple of seconds several times an hour. This is a recent occurrence with the 8642hd.

I see a recent post from last month that didn't show up during my first search. I'll check out the suggestions there since I can't delete this post

Question Audio Problem

I just picked this up today, and setting it up I'm noticing a problem with audio settings. Under the Audio Output setting, it says "Other" and "Dolby Digital". I have my video connected via HDMI and audio connected to a receiver through Optical outputs. With either setting, Dolby Digital or Other, it still sends audio to my both my TV speakers and my receiver. This was never an issue with the 8300. I would just turn my TV speakers off, but some of my other connections require them.

Also, when I set-up the display, to only accept 1080i, 720p, and 480i signals, while on a non-HD channel it sends a 480p signal. I have tried setting the Picture Format to "Auto DVI/HDMI" and "Upconvert-1" and I get the same results. Never had this problem either with the 8300.

Anyone else having these problems?

Edit: Found a new problem. When I turn everything on, my TV is blank with no audio - I have to change the channel on the PVR to get any signal. I have it set to show previously viewed channel when it turns on, changed it to channel 517 (HD Global) and get the same issue.

First, I don't own this box. My best friend does. He is an apple fan boy, and as such, knows nothing about anything computer hardware related. The week of the last UFC fight, he upgraded, as his old rented 8300 was giving him issues. A month prior to that, I just set him up with a 1TB external. I suspected an HDD issue, so I filled his onboard HDD, then plugged in the external and set it all up for him. Worked great.

The new box. In case some of you are wondering, no, you cannot carry over old recordings. You must format. However, I noticed the box didn't ask for the format the first time, it just loaded up and away it went. (With a reduced recording capacity, as he had about 200GB of recordings)

The format was done twice by me. The first one, it never did anything, much like the 8300. You have no idea when it is done. The second time I formatted, it rebooted on its own, and everything worked well. It does give the standard pop-up you see with the 8300 on power failure about the external hdd.

So far, he has had no picture issues, that being said, him and I both suffer from the audio drop out issue, and pixellation issue every few minutes with the 8300. So, he might not even notice it. I am not sure what size his HDD internal is. Whatever Rogers is offering out to renters would be his size.

I assume external drive compatibility is all the same as the 8300HD, but, who knows. I set him up with the same external drive and case that I am using. If anyone needs that info, let me know, and I will find it and pass it on. Tested and works.

Again, I am not an owner, but thought I would pass along my experiences setting this up for someone else. Hopefully, something insightful.

Bombtrack..

I had the exact same audio issue as you when I replaced my 8300 with the 8642. On the old box, I disabled the audio output via HDMI, bt this option isn't available on my new box.. No big deal since I lowered the volume to zero, but sometimes I like to watch OTA stuff (to avoid Simulcasting)

As for the 2nd issue... Let me guess: Do you have a Samsung TV? I haven't experienced issues with this box yet, but did with my old one. But then, I haven't run the HD setup (it didn't prompt me??), so I left things as is. On my other TV (Sony hooked up to a 4250), I just left it at fixed 720p. Honestly, I can't see any difference on a 26" set.

As for the blank screen...Do you leave the PVR on all the time? Mine goes to some sort of screen saver, saying to press any key to continue, but I still get the sound. Maybe you have a different issue.

Have you tried a full reboot (unplug it) ? I'm sure/hope Rogers is gathering all these bugs and will issue a software fix soon. And please give us a decent interface, stop using the legacy one... I'm sure that's the reason for all the bugs!

Thanks for the input wysiwyg, unfortunately yes I've tried the reboot and no fixes.

I'll do the same about the audio until a fix comes out, a bit of a pain but not a big deal in the end.

And yes, I do have a Samsung TV (model is in my sig) and I do find the 480p to look noticeably worse than the 480i.

As for the last point, I turn the PVR off when I turn the TV off, and get this problem so it can't be a screensaver.

From previous threads regarding the 4250HD, it appears that if you have new firmware and use an HDMI connection, the STB will communicate with the TV and choose the "appropriate" formats that the TV can handle. At least this eliminates the "no signal" issues with some TVs (like Samsung) when attempting to use 480i.

If you don't like it, you have a couple of options that I know of (there may be more):

1. Use component video.
2. Use a single fixed format like 1080i.

Here's the HDMI FAQ.
