external eSATA HDD + SA8300HD

Does an external HDD become fragmented over time like it does in a computer? I usually delete the shows/movies after watching them but overall there is always about 15-25 percent full of stuff on my 500GB drive. I am wondering if this effects recording performance since the last several shows/movies I recorded from TMN ended up choppy (i.e., frame dropped) every minute or so, and I am wondering if I should delete all and reformat it...

I don't believe that the file system causes fragmentation, so there's likely another issue. There were some signal problems on TMN about 8-9 days ago (Dexter for example), but they've been resolved. Have you checked your signal strength? Have you performed a cold reboot?

Then that is the problem, for I am watching two week old stuff that I recorded from TMN; Dexter, A Good Year and Cloverfield from Nov 28th and all have the same exact problem. Thanks.
