problems with Videotron & Sony 52xbr4

I have Videotron Explorer 8300HD with a Sony 52XBR4 LCD. My problem is that when a show is broadcast on both US channel (ABC, CBS, or NBC) and Global or CTV, then the US channel picture will intermitantly go on and off (sound remains on). Sometimes this happens on the US Channels even when there is no simulcast on Cdn channel. This seems to happen when broadcast is in 720. Another problem is when switching from a 1080 broadcast to a 720 broadcast, the screen will go to "white noise". I need to switch from TV to DVD and back to re-set.
Is this a problem with Videotron or the TV?

I assume that you're using an HDMI cable, as I've seen these sorts of problems with Sonys connected to SA8300HDs with HDMI, especially if you have it set to "Auto DVI/HDMI" and have the various formats enabled. I've seen this on the XBR4s and on the SXRDs and this has been reported on the forum several times, just so you know you're not alone. The "problem" is with the handshake between the TV and the STB, which doesn't always happen properly - see first link below:

You have a choice of switching to component video cables and all will be fine, or switching to a 1080i channel and then selecting "Fixed" in the set picture format - this will then send 1080i only to the TV and you won't have the problem. Another option is to run the Advanced Setup Wizard and only enable 1080i. See the following threads for additional information on this matter, as well as some useful Newbie information:

Thank you for the quick reply. In which order should the system be turned on to assure best "Handshake" - TV first or Explorer first?

In your case, I don't think that makes any difference. You'll either have to go with component video or only use 1080i only. I've struggled with this issue on several of my installations and was unable to come up with a workaround, other than what I've already mentioned.
