Question 10 bit color depth

I just noticed that the color depth on the cisco 8642 HD shows at being
10 bit whereas when I play blu-rays it is 12 bit.
What is the difference???

Image on blu ray uses very large consuming bandwith codecs, going as high as 21Mbps I think, maybe even more. it is impossible to offer that bandwith on cable, so less bits on the colors simplify the compression. That is why no 4K TV either for the coming years.
