Likely when (Dish) was testing the feature, 1 TB drives were not available, and therefore not tested. Just covering their butts.

Makes sense.

So if you archive a program, do you have to copy it back to the PVR to be able to watch it, or can you watch it direct from the External HD?

If so, can you archive programs to the EHD while watching shows from the EHD?

You can watch a program directly from the EHD. The EHD shows as a folder in the recordings menu along with your other recordings.

You can use the receiver as you normally would (watch/record) while transferring to the EHD.

Last q: can you select a bunch of shows to archive and have it do it in the background? Or is it 1 at a time?

You can select as many programs as you like, and archive them all in the back ground.

I decided to return my LaCie 1TB drive. It worked okay, but I discovered after that it is actually two 500 GB disks. It doesn't say that anywhere on the box though. It has a noisy fan that is constantly starting and stopping - very annoying for a PVR.

I picked up the Western Digital My Book 1TB drive. It's a single disk with no fan, so it's much quieter. It formatted out ok, and seems to work. I'll give you my opinion after I've done more with it.

this is an aside question but I noticed after the upgrade that my 9242 runs VERY warm. I've been think about getting a cooling fan designed for the PS3 that plugs into the USB port. I know that if you use the HDD expansion you must use a powered USB harddrive but would this usb fan option work even though its powered from the USB port? Thoughts, ideas, other cooling options/suggestions?

Everything works ok here using my 350Gb Lacie Ext HD $69 from Future Shop. Wish it recorded directly as an option though.
I prefer to shut it off when I don't use it as it spins all the time although it's quiet and doesn't get too hot. When the PVR is shut off it would be neat to power down the USB but the ext. HD may never go to standby anyway.

The archive function is quite slow even on very fast hard drives (750GB Sata2). The USB2 connection is seemingly the limiting factor and perhaps the reason the feature was not offered on the 9200. Still it's a very nice feature.

Has anyone else had an archive that started but never ended? Happened a couple of times while watching TV while the archive ran in the background.

I've saw once where it didn't popup a message to say the Archiving was complete, but it had finished.

Moved a lot of posts.

See Will External Drive Work on 9200? if you wish to discuss.

Any further posts on this thread about whether the hard drive works on any model other than the 9242 will be deleted!

I have been using a DIY External HD box since last week without incident and highly recommend it.

Bell has just sent me a 500GB Lacie Device to review and I suspect it will work identically but I am interested if any differences occur and what will happen when I swap drives.

Regarding my earlier post - The reason some of my archives did not complete is that I exited the progress screen by hitting CANCEL on my remote.
Gives the same result as selecting STOP TRANSFER.

9242 External USB Harddrive

Has any one used this feature? I see that Bell have a 750 HD for sale to use with the 9242. Can you use any HD or does it have to be formatted differently. Also when you Archive your movies onto the drive are you able to copy them to your computer and watch them
Thanks
Rick
