TVs use IR to detect the ambient light level. If your auto-brightness is on, the room is being sprayed with IR from the emitter on the front of the set. Nothing to do with HDMI.

I covered my IR receivers on the PVR, and the trouble stopped. I'm now using remote #2 to control the PVR. Whatever Bell did in the update, they did something to the IR receiver in the PVR, causing it to be too sensitive or otherwise glitchy.

This is why everyone should have a Plasma Television

Seriously though, they should be able to fix this quickly since it's fairly obvious what's happening.

I still very much doubt that it has anything to do with spraying of IR throughout the room. I scanned the room with my digital camera looking for sources of IR blasting while the problem was actively happening and found none.

Beforehand I did test the digital camera on various IR emitter sources to ensure that an IR source was visible on camera.

I suspect the IR is just glitchy, such that normal use causes these symptoms. It's never happened when I use the front panel controls.

Seems like only the 9242's are having this problems with this recent firmware upgrade, no noted complaints with the 9241's v234. Maybe because it don't use a IR remote.

That PVR can be accept input from a Harmony IR remote though. So it seems strange with all the people using harmony's that the 9241 wasn't flagged as doing the same thing as the 9242.

My 9242 is still at V183 and I have a plasma TV - so I guess I'm quite safe. :-)

Different chips and components/parts in each PVR I guess.

Anyway my 9241 hooked up to a Samsung LCD has not had any problems since the firmware upgrade.

Wow, very poor quality assurance on Bell's part. Bell will be held responsible for any damage to receivers from an update they send. We're not talking just one person here being impacted.

An idea from another thread is to press play as your last command as the 9242 seems to keep repeating whatever the last command was, if it repeats play while watching nothing will happen. Still need to be careful when navigating the menus but at least you can watch programs with relatively no issues.

New functionality in the 9242 that I hate is that pressing Guide multiple times does not switch the guide to the next favourite. Instead it brings up a dialog box that forces you to then select the Guide you want.

I hate it.

Anyone know if you can switch back to the old behaviour?

The 6131 does that as well.

Hugh: Go to menu 8-2 (Preferences-Favourites) You can go back to the other way of changing the Guide type.

It was added because many, many people were hitting the guide button several times and unaware they were on the HD Only list. They would think that they lost channels and were calling for help.

Yes, we started doing that. Still, doesn't help when you're trying to access a prerecorded show in your PVR list.

Same issue here started about a week ago. Only solution I've found is to cover the IR reciever on it which means I can use the Harmony or the Slingbox repeater.

For those of you with the IR issue, please see the following thread on the topic. It has nothing to do with two-way HDMI connection. It's IR intereference (spray) from the TV. Various workarounds are outlined in the post:

http://www.digitalhome.ca/forum/showthread.php?t=64463

(This sort of interference is not viewable on a digital camera) The issue was also discussed in the following (parallel) thread:

http://www.digitalhome.ca/forum/showthread.php?t=119419

Hopefully revised firmware with less sensitivity will fix the issue for you once implemented, however, proper setup of the TV will usually help too, providing not only a resolution to this issue, but also better PQ on the TV.

57 - Never had the issue prior to last week, same setup for last couple years. So don't think it is the TV. Somethig nseems to have changed recently with the 9242 receiver.
