I want to send good video clips (30fps) as email attachments. The original file size could be between 30 megs and 100 megs. Is there an easy way, maybe with common software to compress such files to a more manageable size?
Windows comes with software (Movie Maker) that will save your AVI in a variety of sizes and formats. You could also look at products from Roxio and Ulead if you want to do editing.
What format are these videos currently in? mpeg I assume? (like from a camera?)
What output size do you want? ie. what resolution?
XP? Vista? other?
Tough to help when we don't have all the info!
MPEG4 may provide the best compression while maintaining quality. The files will still be large. Some utilities will provide more compression but video and audio quality is usually lost. Large amounts of compression will cause significant loss of quality.
Another option is a compression utility like 7zip. It will compress the file (if possible) and break it up into chunks suitable for emailing. At the other end, put all the chunks in a directory and decompress with 7zip.
Other options would be a peer to peer file transfer or uploading the file to private web space for transfer.
You could use Windows Media Encoder, which is free from Microsoft's web site. You will likely find it easy to use - if you stick with the defaults.
