Exclamation Gamestop & EB Games no longer offering extended warranty on XBOX360

I know they say any publicity is good publicity but this kind of publicity can't possibly be good and it seems like this issue keeps rearing it's ugly head and making headlines again and again. All I know is that August 2008 and "jasper" versions of the XBOX 360 can't come soon enough for Microsoft (see 2nd related article further below).

Has anyone actually heard of people's consoles still failing? Ever since the whole GPU heatsink revision, I haven't heard of any failures, and I should know, I went through 7 consoles using MS' warranty.

A google search still shows a number of posts with people seeing RROD on new heatsinks. Having said that, there will always be some percentage of that happening regardless. Too early to tell one way or another until more get into the market. A significant trend should be seen post xmas if it is swinging the other way.

I asked about the warranty at futureshop while purchasing a new elite bundle and they said that only the original xbox 360's are covered.

Umm, the brand-new (with 2nd GPU heatsink) replacement that I received RROD'd after 5 hours of use. You've now heard of one...

not true, all you have to do is get them to switch the serial number.

Sounds like the perfect thing to do. Should be easy for everyone to do this.

that is what I did and my warranty slip has my new 360 serial but the warranty still ends from the 3 years after I bought the original.

Ever since I got an xbox 360 last friday, I get three red lights. I'll turn it on, get three lights (top right quadrant off) so I turn it off and back on and it boots up fine.

I don't think it should be doing that.

When you get the 3 red lights, you can get a secondary error code to see what the issue is:

Bouche, you just bought an xbox and you get the three red rings? I'd say return it and exchange it for a different one. There will always be defective hardware, granted that the 360 has a far from stellar record.
With regards to the new models not getting the red ring, I think that it is important to differentiate newly built models with the HDMI and those that have been refurbished. I just bought an xbox 2 weeks ago and I am hoping that the newer models are more reliable.

Thanks, I'll give that a shot

Granted, it does start on the second power-on, but clearly they should not be coming on at all. I'll probably end up a futureshop this weekend for an exchange. I don't want to have to box up the entire thing though.
