Sony to sell new 40GB PlayStation 3 - free Spiddy 3 movie

This is not confirmed by sony yet but a $400 BD machine with SM3 would sure spice up the Holidays...

Oh and you get a kick-ass gaming system as a bonus...

There has never been a 40Gig system, and yes, the 20 Gig was discontinued.

You are not confused, a 40G machine never existed AFAIK... This would be something new.

So this is US pricing I suspect. Probably puts it at around $449 CA then?

Probably... Which is quite respectable for a gaming machine + BD player combo. Maybe they'll lower the standalone price to $350 is this actually happens.

I paid more than that for the defunct 20G model... Price to pay for early adoption I suppose.

Exactly. This was a European machine, not a North American one.

Well... More news about this, seems like we may get a $400 console/BD player in time for the Holidays...

Why would anyone buy a $599 PS3 with an 80GB drive if a $399 PS3 with a 40GB drive was available?

I just bought the 80GB for $549.

I thought I had read that the rumoured 40GB was going to be a stripped version with no backwards compatibility at all and likely missing other features like the card reader and wireless. Essentially it was a cheaper version of the original 20GB?

I have to say, playing around with their SKUs like this is starting to reek of desperation. How many quick changes can they justify?

Panasonic TH50PX77, *Choice 530, Samsung 40C650, Sharp LC3742U, *Choice 505, Pioneer VSX-D409, Xbox 360, PS3 x 2

It's not unlike Microsoft with the core, elite and whatever other version they have... I have the 20G and it has everything the 60G has less the wireless and card reader. I believe backward compatibility is still in but without the emotion engine (i.e., software based, just like the 80G model).

Bottom line though at $400 it makes a hell of a good Blu-Ray player...

At least Sony lets you upgrade the HDD... If a big HDD is your thing it's probably better to get the 40G (if and when it's available) and then upgrade it to a 500G drive...

BTW, Tiger has 500G Seagate drives for $99...
