Seem like it will happen!

In the latest issue of Home Media Magazine they say the $399 US PS3 will be coming to the US on November 2. It is on page #1 of the magazine which can be found here:

""I think you're going to see some pretty aggressive prices over the holiday season which will be very close to U.S. pricing," Levitan said."

That is good news for PS3 and in general for CE's.

God why oh why is Sony doing all this! its just conufsing the customers. the 40 gig model is basicly like the 20 gig model but from what i heard it will only play PS3 games. no backward compatibility. they need to get there minds made up ! now a dual shock controller is coming out! Glad i only have 2 sixasis controllers. Sony get your act together!

Well it should be considerably cheaper so I think that is the main thing they are trying to do. I would think the Cdn price will be $450.

If I'm reading that right the 80GB will only be $100 more? What more is there on the 80GB besides the larger HD and PS2 compatibility?

Personally, I think those 2 things would be enough to justify the extra $100 alone.

My understanding is that those are the main differences. I personally don't think the extra hard drive size is worth much of anything. I have the 60GB model and still have 40GB free on my HD and have downloaded a lot of demos, trailers, etc. You can always upgrade the hard drive yourself to something much bigger later if you really need extra space for something.

To me it's really $100 mostly for the backwards compat. Personally I am glad my PS3 has backwards compat. I have bought a few PS2 games since they are so cheap. Almost all of the games I have played and own are PS3 ones but it's nice to know I can go out and get more PS2 games and play them on mine if I want.

I bet there are many people out there would don't care about playing PS2 games on it though since they already have a PS2 or could pick one up cheap. At least for now people will have an option.

I don't think anyone knows yet about the Cdn price but I'm guessing $450 Cdn. In an ideal world it would be $400 US and $400 Cdn but I won't believe that until I see it.

Fewer USB ports (yeah, you can buy a hub but add that cost in then) and no card readers (meh) as well.

I have to wonder if the newly discounted 80GB will continue to include a game.

Sony is cutting their prices so quickly it's hard to never feel burned.

All I can say is I am glad I only paid $550 for my 80GB bundle with Motorstorm and a remote, or I would be upset to see it drop another $100 mere weeks later.

I don't know where my previous reply went, but anyway, the official press release says that the Canadian price will match the US price, making MS the only console maker to not update its prices to match the strengthening dollar. As it stands, Sony has created a compelling offer in this country.

From press release issued today

Quote:
Sony Computer Entertainment America Inc. (SCEA) today announced plans to introduce a new 40GB model of its PLAYSTATION(R)3 (PS3(TM)) computer entertainment system. Beginning November 2nd, to further enhance the HD entertainment experience, the new 40GB PS3 model will come bundled with the blockbuster movie Spider-Man(TM) 3 Blu-ray Disc(TM) (BD) from Sony Pictures Home Entertainment, and will be available in North America for a suggested retail price of $399 (USD/CND). The company also announced that effective immediately, the current 80GB PS3 model will be available in North America for $499 (USD/CND), $100 below the original launch price.

"We're pleased to offer the consumer a lower price point without sacrificing the core technology components that make PS3 the most advanced high-definition entertainment system available. Every PS3 comes with a Blu-ray drive, HDMI output, an integrated Wi-Fi connection, Cell Broadband Engine and a built-in hard-drive," said Jack Tretton, President and CEO, SCEA. "This holiday season we'll be able to offer attractive retail pricing with a broad portfolio of outstanding games including Ratchet & Clank(R) Future: Tools of Destruction(TM), THE EYE OF JUDGMENT(TM), Uncharted: Drake's Fortune(TM), Heavenly Sword(TM), Call of Duty(R) 4: Modern Warfare, Assassin's Creed(TM), Haze(TM) and RockBand(TM)."

The new 40GB PS3 will no longer play PlayStation(R)2 titles, reflecting the availability of a more extensive line-up of PS3 specific titles. Consumers looking for backwards compatibility can take advantage of the limited PlayStation 2 backwards compatibility of the 80GB PS3.
