Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 - A rag-tag team of mercenaries must work together to destroy an infinitely powerful being who plans to destroy civilizations throughout the universe...and who also happens to be the father of one of Guardians.

Comments: Like its predecessor - only more so - this movie was extremely imaginative, chock full of astounding CGI, overly-busy and cursed with annoying characters. Groot, however, was cuter.

Mother! - Mother and Him lead a quiet life in the house she is restoring until strangers disrupt the silence and drive her into increasingly-violent madness.
-OR-
An agglomeration of vaguely-defined allegories explodes on-screen.

Comments: Loved the suffocating tension, the spiralling chaos and Jennifer Lawrence's incredible performance. Didn't care for the opaque story-telling.

Unstoppable - Runaway train Triple 7 is seemingly unstoppable...but Frank Barnes and Will Colson are going to stop it.

Comments: The best parts of this movie were the thunderous LFE and the giddy high I got from the severe overdose of cinematic cheese.

BlacKkKlansman - Black police officer Ron Stallworth (the voice) and his white partner, Flip Zimmerman (the face), attempt to infiltrate and neutralize the Colorado Springs chapter of the KKK.

Comments: Despite being somewhat long-winded and unnecessarily over-filled with slurs, this was an interesting "based on a true story" black comedy. Surprisingly - and perhaps deliberately - the most shocking part of the movie is ending's tie-in to relatively recent events in the U.S.

Crazy Rich Asians - Boy meets girl and introduces her to wealthy, traditional family. Boy loses girl who, on her way out, makes a profound, last-ditch impact on matriarch. Boy wins back girl with blessing of matriarch.

Comments: Highly unoriginal - the "Brokeback Mountain" of rom-com - but entertaining overall with some good scenes and beautiful cinematography.

The Hate U Give - Black teenager Starr Carter's already-complicated life becomes even more difficult when her childhood friend, Khalil, is shot and killed in front of her by a white cop and she must decide whether to keep quiet for the sake and safety of her family or speak up for justice for her friend and for her people.

Comments: Although occasionally it seemed (deliberately?) to lose its edge and fall into formula, this was overall a powerful, thoughtful and well-acted movie. Props to Amandla Stenberg for her strong and impressive performance.

Widows - In order to repay an outstanding debt and save themselves, the widowed wives of thieves decide to undertake the heist that was to be their husbands' next job. But before they can get around to it...

Comments: ...we stopped watching the movie because it just wasn't very good (weak story, characters and dialogue).

First Man - Leaving behind his devoted and resilient wife, Janet, to take care of the kids, Neil Armstrong ascends through the ranks of space-program astronauts and, eventually, to the Moon.

Comments: A slow-but-steady biopic with some good dramatic moments, visuals and performances.

On the Basis of Sex - Ruth Bader Ginsburg acquires a powerful legal mind and then puts it work tearing down the barriers of gender inequality in America.

Comments: She and her story are impressive, but the movie could not have been a more saccharine, paint-by-numbers, "based on a true story" drama. Inoffensive but, ultimately, disappointing.

Rocketman - While in rehab, Elton John tells his story of tragedy and triumph.

Comments: This entertaining, "based on a true story" bio-pic featured some well-choreographed, musical flights-of-fancy and fine performances from the leads including and especially Taron Egerton.

Avengers: Endgame - In order to undo all of the damage wrought by today's Thanos in the previous film, the remaining Avengers travel quantumly back through time, gather all of the Infinity Stones and then travel quantumly forward through time to set things right. Unfortunately, yesterday's Thanos has learned of their plan and managed also to travel quantumly forward through time so that he can regain control of the Infinity Stones and destroy the universe. To prevent him from doing so, the Avengers - plus almost every other (Marvel) super-hero who has ever existed - must battle Thanos anew. If all goes well, Captain America will travel quantumly back through time to put the Stones back where they came from and all will be as right as can be.

Comments: It was about as bloated, busy and "meh" as I expected it to be.

Hustlers - Sometimes stripping will pay the bills, but sometimes you've gotta hustle.

Comments: Aside from a few good scenes, this movie was a fairly bland and banal "inspired by a true story" drama.

Line of Duty - Goings-on in a UK Police anti-corruption unit

Comments: Quite a series of series - much better to start with Series One (2012) as there are threads that continue. Series 4 (mostly) wrapped up a story line that started in Series 1. The final episode of each series tends to get a bit implausible as the denouement with lots of action takes place, but sure is fun.

Taking a breather before borrowing Season 5 from TPL. Season 6 is current and Series 7 is promised

Once Upon A Time In...Hollywood - 1969 is a tumultuous year for actor Rick Dalton and his best friend and stunt double, Cliff Booth.

Comments: Unmistakably a Tarantino flick: A little bit of story + some retro stuff + bloody violence + a whole lot of mono/dialogue-heavy filler. There were some solid performances, though, not the least of which was Julia Butters'.

Doctor Sleep - the best adaptation of a Stephen King work in 2019. Far better than IT Chapter 2. Director Mike Flanagan, of the Netflix Haunting of Hill House fame, crafts a true sequel that stands alongside the giant that is Kubrick's - The Shining.

Comments: Not only does Flanagan nimbly adapt the Doctor Sleep book to merge with King's Shining novel and Kubrick's movie, he also injects the missing warmth of Kubrick's adaptation back into the Shining story. The extended edition of Doctor Sleep is the way to go. This is a first rate production across the board. Rachel Ferguson is a fantastic villain as Rose The Hat and Kyleigh Curran is a real find as Abra Stone - a young girl who has The Shining like Dan Torrance.
