USB keyboard problems on laptop

I have a HP laptop. I have been plugging in a Dell usb keyboard and using it with no problem. However after I use the keyboard and unplug it I then have problems with the laptop's keyboard. It acts like the fn key is depressed all the time. The only way to correct this is to restore to a previous date. Then it happens again after the next time I use the USB keyboard. Any suggestions?

Just a shot in the dark, and awkward... but maybe go into the Device Manager when you are done with the USB keyboard and "Uninstall" it from the Keyboards list before you unplug it?

Try checking the BIOS settings - my laptop (Thinkpad) has some setting there that affects how external keyboard is "seen" or something. Just a guess...
