HD-A1 Drive and PC

My oshiba HD-A1 bit the dust long ago. It would not power up. So I decided to day to tear it apart and take the NEC drive out of it. Figuring I might be able to salvage some of the money invested in the A1 into my PC.

I run Vista Ultimate with an Nvidia 7900 GTO Dual DVI out video card.

Has anyone ever gotten any use out of the NEC drive that was in the HD-A1? I do not want to spend $100 on PowerDVD or another piece of software if I am just wasting my money.

My Westinghouse 32" only has a VGA input No HDMI on my Video Card) so I think that may be a problem down the road.

Am I wasting my time?

From what I've read on other sites it appears that others have tried exactly what you plan and the farthest anyone has got is to use the drive as a DVD and CD drive. PowerDVD and the like don't appear to work yet but I imagine someone will get it working soon.

Mitsubishi HC1500 projector, 3 FibreOp 2.0 HDTV receivers, Draper 120 inch screen, HD Media PC i7 920, ATI 4800 Radeon.
