Xbox vs Vista vs Netgear for music and video streaming?

I'm setting up a new home theater and the last remaining item I need to purchase is a streaming device. I have ethernet in my cabinet that is wired to a nice setup running Vista with plenty of storage that is in a different room.

What would be the best option for me to get music and video (xvid/divx, avi, mpeg, etc) to pump through my nice 1080p plasma?

1. An XBox 360 Elite?
2. Netgear EVA8000?
3. A full blown computer running Media Centre or Vista?
4. Some other option I haven't thought of?

I'm leaning toward the xbox elite because it provides a few more features to my setup but will it allow me to stream all types of video? Does it handle a music library on my network nicely?

Your help is appreciated!

The 360 does do pictures and music well, but will not stream divx without some extras on the computer. If you are going to use it for gaming as well I think it is a great option, but not if it is primarily for streaming.

Two extras that will let you do divx and more:
Transcode 360 -

Also see TVersity as a great app that enhances XBox 360 media capabilities, including transcoding Divx.

A couple of other options to consider:

- A modded 1st gen XBOX running XBMC -
- A PC running MediaPortal -

The only downside of the XBOX route is that it's not powerful enough to properly handle HD video. MediaPortal looks very interesting and is based on XBMC.

This might be an option as well

Still trying to figure out the difference between "want" and "need"....
