Thanks stampeder. That is it. The one in particular I was looking at was the DIGIAIR. It isn't cheap, but not as expensive as pro gear.

Elgato's new teeny-weeny USB TV Tuner - world's smallest

Did I mention its tiny? Elgato has released the EyeTV DTT DeLuxe with their usual Mac support but also with a full set of WIndows drivers too. Sorry, its only for DVB-T but no word of an ATSC version for North America:

That's awesome..
If they make an ATSC version (that has a good tuner in it )
I may buy one simply for pure portability.
Assuming it doesn't overheat because it's too small.

HVR-850

Just wondering what opinions there are out there on the HVR-820 USB stick from Hauppauge? It seems very inexpensive compared to some others out there. I am just looking for digital OTA on a laptop or HTPC, what are the pros and cons of this device?
Thanks in advance for all your great advice.

It will do the job, it's just the "bottom" model (don't get me wrong, it should still tune well, as my 1250 does. I believe they're equivalent, just 1250 is pic-e)
If you're getting USB, most suggest the 950q. The sensitive tuner is worth the small price premium.

There are (were ?) two versions of the HVR-850 as described here.
The 2040:7240 version has the exact same tuner as the HVR-950Q, so should perform just as well for digital OTA.

HVR-1250 vs HVR-950Q

I just picked up a couple of HVR-950Q at a good price...Wow! neat piece of gadget that has shinny LEDs showing the status of the tuner and signal plus automatic power saving features.

I finally get around to compare how the tuners pick up the channels. Well, the winner is......................

HVR-1250!!!!

Both tuners got the distance channels well including WNYO 49.1. To my surprise, the HVR-950Q had big time trouble with 57.1 CityHD whilst the HVR-1250 picked it up ok...off same splitter to same HTPC. My other 950Q in another computer also did not pick up CityHD good.

Unless you have specific need for a USB tuner, the HVR-1250 looks to be a better performer for ATSC PVRing. The other issue is from the SLEEP state, it took 5 seconds for the 950Q to initialize and be ready. It changes channels fast after it has been ON.

Good to know!
I've had no reception issues with my 1250, so I guess that's why
(It's noticeably better than my 950-old, and about the same as the tuner in my Samsung T240HD)

I got 3 HVR-1250 and 2 950Q so I'm perhaps a little biased

950Q only had problem yesterday on 57.1 while the HVR-1250 was still happy. This is how you tell which one is better when the going gets tough.

The 1250 is comparable to my Sammy A550, my Visiontek AIW-HD has a good ATSC tuner also.

Wink

Just ordered up a Diamond TVW650USBW ATI TV Wonder HD 650 Combo USB
from Fry's. Dual Tuner, NTSC, ATSC, Clear QAM, FM Radio, Hardware Mpeg Compression, so I'm thinkin it should be able to record Analog as well. From what I read ya need to load the right drivers to enable the Dual Tuner Functionality. 40 bux plus shipping. Seemed like a bargain. I'll report back once I get it and have had a chance to test it. I wanna see how it's ATSC Tuner is, relative to the one I've been using.

Just making sure you know: "dual tuner" is in reference to that it does both analog and digital channels, not that it can do two channels at once.

The 650 is a decent tuner, but pretty old by today's standards unless they've updated it a bit.

Yeah, I know it's old, but what's 40 bux...
A quote from a member of a different forum suggests he was able to get it to work in Dual Mode...

Quote:
driver cd that came with it says "180-V01126-100" which only works in "either-or" tuner mode..[single]
but i loaded my cd from pcie-650, "180-V01128-100" which enables dual tuner on pcie card[cat 8.11], and it works with this one too!
Should be easy enough to find that driver I'm thinkin...
Besides it has h/w compression too.
We'll see when it shows up and I have a chance to test it myself.

Hi edvale,

Do you know how can one tell from the box if it is the device based on the AU8522 chip with the XC5000 tuner (device id 2040:7240)?

Thanks in advance

No, sorry, I don't. Can you buy from a store with a good return policy?

Thanks edvale,

Actually I asked Hauppauge directly and they told me:

"Hi Jorge.

The earlier HVR-850 had the model and tuner you are looking for but no longer. The WinTV-HVR-950Q (pn 1191) does have what you are looking for—always did and does now so trying to figure out what is in the box is immaterial.

Regards,

Hauppauge Sales Team
