HDMI Audio output while TV is off

Right now, my PC is hooked up to my Onkyo AVR via HDMI (GeForce GTX 560 Ti GPU). For movies, TV, and Music I'm using XBMC in Windows.

Is there some way I could keep audio being output to the receiver even if I turn off my TV? Right now, if I turn off the TV my computer automatically flips back to my regular computer monitor and disables the HDMI port when I look in Sound Preferences.

Maybe this again is another drawback to the AVR I'm using, but figured I'd ask in case there's a setting in Windows and/or the AVR I am missing.

Windows has a nasty habit of disabling devices that have no device present. Hooking up the optical audio and enabling that might work for music. That's what I do. It requires switching inputs on the A/V receiver when the TV is turned on and off. The optical could be used all the time but it doesn't support lossless audio so the sound won't be as good for Blu-ray.

Another option might be to reboot the PC with the TV off. The handshake with the AVR may be enough, but we have encountered exactly what you refer to with some equipment. You may also need to hit the Fn-F4 (or whichever) key to enable the external monitor output (or "mirror" the monitor output), perhaps when you turn the TV off or after a reboot. Each PC, AVR, TV combination is different.
