In Mythsetup on "Page 2. Capture cards" go to the "DVB:/dev/dvb/adapterX/frontendX" entry for each of the 950Qs. I select the "Recording Options" submenu and set the values to "Max recordings: 2", I deselect "Wait for SEQ start header", I select "Open DVB card on demand", I deselect "Use DVB card for active EIT scan" and I set/leave the "DVB tuning delay (ms):" value at zero. With that modprobe.conf entry I mentioned earlier the 950Qs always seem to be ready.

thanks stampeder..
those settings in mythtv-setup ensures the adapter/frontends are closed when mythtv isn't using them. freeing them up for other applications when not actually in use.
just did that here, and works like a champ so far..

I should also explain that I never use the EIT scan function since I subscribe to schedulesdirect.org so I don't need it.

right, me neither... I just use zap2it
but i didn't realize there were two places to untick the eit scan story.
once at the channel level which I've always done, and again there in the recordings options at the adapter level.

It was really helpful for globally deselecting EIT on the OTA tuners while keeping EIT on the DVB-S tuners I used to run a long time ago.

Hmm. Maybe I will give my HVR-950Q a try again sometime. I don't really need 4 tuners though (rarely do I use all three), so I am not in a panic.

Speaking of setup items disappearing, do you know how to configure the what is meant by high, medium and low transcoding in 0.27? I had them all set to do a lossless transcode and want to double check that it is still setup that way, but can't find the setup menu for that any more.

On the mythbackend use mythsetup to get to Recording Options and you'll find transcoding options in there. The default High setting is lossless, which is what I use.

Oh, they moved it to the backend setup. Surprising as the trend has been to move things to the frontend setup.

In case anyone else ever runs in to this.
Since upgrading to Mint17, wasn't able to play recorded streams (flowplayer) via mythweb.
This was the fix for me...

I am playing with MythTV on Mint (latest I think).

I kind of have it working, but have issues which irk me.

Live TV takes a few long seconds to come up.

How do manual recordings come up in the "to record list" or generally use it as a VCR without an EPG, with multiple manual recordings I can keep track of?

I don't want to subscribe to schedules direct for the one channel I receive OTA, nor set up and keep up with web scrapers. If I could easily manually populate the EPG with what I care for would be okay.

How can I easily control it as a second screen, on a dual screen (first is a desktop), preferably with my MCE remote on the CIR remote sensor.

Very handy for DXers.

With the latest mythtv versions the user can set an upper and lower channel for scans, which is helpful if you already know the local spread of expected stations from TVFool. I'd like to see some sort of Boolean tool that lets people deselect ranges within 7-51 if they know that there is nothing to be seen. It would speed things up for some people (i.e. someone with a couple of VHF-HI stations and then nothing on UHF until the low 30s).

classicsat,
if ya don't wanna subscribe to SD for guide info, do what I do....
Use zap2xml, which scrapes the old zap2it website for listings info for your 'favorite" channels, and creates an xmltv.xml file that ya can use with 'mythfilldatabase'

http://zap2xml.awardspace.info/

follow the instructions there to set it up, then in the zap2xml.pl per script edit the hyperlink to point to the yahoo version of zap2it, which still has all the old zap2it functionality... Either reply here with any issues ya run in to or where ever Stampeder moves your post. One way or another we can help ya get it set up so ya always have the next 14 days worth of guide in ur mythbox..

I don't want to muck with scrapers either, if my post wasn't clear. Plus it seems I would need to sign up for another account, even though it is free. It might be worth the effort or subscription for a few channels, but in my case, neither is worth it. It was hard enough getting Myth TV to work to the point it is.

I just need it to manual record like a VCR, period.

It's really simple...I will post my cron entry that runs each night to update it automatically.
a little bit later...The email address ya use to 'sign up' doesn't even have to be a real one..

edit: sample crontab entry to update epg every nite, once for a mythtv backend, and again for a tvheadend backend
I have been playing around with both a little bit lately, not at the same time obviously
