Samsung buys Boxee, keeping on full staff

Article text:

Several Israeli news agencies are reporting that Korean electronics giant Samsung purchased set-top box company Boxee today. The Tel Aviv-based company apparently got less than the $30 million it was reportedly seeking, thus coming up at a loss since being founded in 2007. Boxee's approximately 40 employees are said to be staying on, including president Avner Ronen. A Boxee rep tells Engadget "We can't comment on the accuracy of those reports." Samsung has not yet responded to our inquiries, but we'll update this post as we learn more.

Update: TechCrunch is also confirming the acquisition, and cites its own "reliable sources."

Update 2: Samsung confirmed the acquisition to us this afternoon. A Samsung statement reads, "Samsung has acquired key talent and assets from Boxee. This will help us continue to improve the overall user experience across our connected devices."

Verrrrrrry interesting.

IMO their new set top boxee live tv thing is a piece of crap, whereas their original Boxee Box is/was fantastic and still does things none of the others do properly.

Crystal ball says Samsung will put zero effort (developers / programmers) into Boxee after an initial re-release (if any). Samsung as best I can figure is a hardware company.

Sounds like they just wanted some programming talent.

Not solely a hardware company. They're heavily into Android software as well. They did hire the Cyanogenmod developer quite some time ago, which we can assume is to tweak their Android/Touchwiz stuff.

With Boxee based on XBMC code, they could be more interested in the code to implement it within their "Smart TV's" without the need of a dedicated STB.

Boxee hasn't really made much money, they scrapped their "Boxee Box" after just 2 years and left a bunch of people in the dust. Their Cloud DVR never got publicly released.

And, now the cloud dvr service is squashed, again, putting a bunch of people out.

And any support that was expected for the Boxee Box like the (previously announced, delayed and now unspoken of) flash update are certainly dead.

Such a shame.

While interesting, I just don't think Boxee had the resources to get content providers on board. Aside from content providers like Netflix that will work with practically any IHV, Boxee just didn't have the side to get people's attention.

This is a area where I expect companies like Microsoft or Apple will be able to do much better.

Samsung probably figures they could leverage Boxee's code to make their Smart TVs smarter.
