Yes. I suspect we won't see it until October. October 26th is launch day IIRC.

It looks like the U.S. price for the WMC add-on will be $12.79. People who pay to upgrade from a previous version of Windows to Win 8 Pro will not have to pay extra for WMC.

It's a fair price that I don't mind paying. The part that concerns me is will the purchase go towards enhancing it? I doubt it and that is very unfortunate.

We set out to make it as easy as possible for everyone to upgrade to Windows 8. Starting at general availability, if your PC is running Windows XP, Windows Vista, or Windows 7 you will qualify to download an upgrade to Windows 8 Pro for just $39.99 in 131 markets. And if you want, you can add Windows Media Center for free through the “add features” option within Windows 8 Pro after your upgrade.
Source.

Unfortunately, we'll need to wait until the public release to be able to get WMC on Windows 8. Sad panda.

Microsoft says the cost is to cover the additional licensing fees, including the DVD component.

I'm running Win 8 Release Preview with the free WMC add-on about 23 hours a day and it's very stable. I've seen some posts that seem to say you can buy the WMC add-on if you have Win 8 RTM.

Thumbs up New App DLNA client

I just discovered there is a new app in the Windows 8 app store called Truelink + which is a DLNA playback client. Seems to work well!

New Windows 8 HTPC

So I built my new HTPC the other day, not without a few hardware issues, but there you go.

Was considering buying Windows 7 Home edition, when found a pre release of Windows 8.

Installed it quickly and easily and had the system up and running pretty well within an hour. Not bad at all.

Am being bugged to activate windows and buy a license, but when I try I get the message that its not available to purchase yet, does anyone else have that?

The technical term for those posts would be "wrong". I just checked, and as of today the RTM version of Windows 8 still produces an error when you go to the "Add Features to Windows 8" wizard, and the "accepted answer" on the Microsoft forum on this topic is as follows:

Media Center Pack for Windows 8 WON'T be available until October 26, then it Will be free until January 31st. So plan accordingly.

This is likely not a prerelease but a black market download of either Win8 RTM or Technet Win8. The real prerelease is Win8 RC (Release Candidate) which is (or was) available directly from Microsoft (.com). I believe it includes WMC and does not require activation (or if it does, the key is provided on the download page.)

You are playing with fire if you are downloading and installing Windows O/Ses from unknown sources. If you want a legit pre-release version of Windows 8 that includes Windows Media Center the link is here. http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/w...nter_ISO_EN-US

Includes? I have that installed and I don't see any WMC.

Sorry it isn't included but you can add it on today easily enough.

Arthur Dent, see Windows 8 "Release Preview".

audacity, thanks for clearing that up - there was a lot of confusion in the early days, since the hooks were there, but the purchase couldn't be completed. I've already decided to stick with Release Preview with WMC for now and not bother with RTM.
