Jetstream HD: Streaming device for iPad and Airplay users

An Ottawa based company has released a media streaming device called JetStream HD.

It connects to your router. Once connected it finds and catalogues media on your network. Next you load the Jetsream app on your ipad and you can stream media from your network to your ipad via the JetStreamHD. Also supports Apple Airplay.

So the benefit of Jetstream is it can transcode files from your network for use on your iPad or Airplay.

Cost is $200

In looking at it, I really can't figure why you would pay $200 for Jetstream when you can load Air Video on your computer and buy the Air Video app for less than $5.

Faster transcoding? My PC may be old but it still has decent specs (2.4GHz Core 2) and Air Video's transcoding takes a while to get going.

Quite possibly, especially if your PC is running other apps.

Sorry Larry but I simply don't see the benefit. Too many other cheaper streaming devices and PC software solutions out there to rationalize $200.

I did not see this the first time, so better late than never. Since launching the product last September we have added Live HD TV and have lowered the price to $124.99.

Compared to apps like Airplay, StreamToMe and others our main advantage is that you do not need to dedicate a PC to the streaming function. If you have used a software solution on your PC, you know that it spins all the CPU and fans up to maximum and is virtually unuseable when transcoding.

We designed the jetstreamhd as a plug in play appliance that is very energy efficient; compared to having your PC on all the time, we can save between $65 and $100 a year in energy costs and if you elect to attache a USB hardrive directly to the jetstreamhd, there is no need to have any PC on in the network.

The jetstreamhd is fanless and uses hardware accelerated transcode to insure the best possible video experience independent of how powerful your PC may be.

We also support all your home media in a single application with support for streaming your photos, songs and Live HD TV in addition to video. We are also proud of our user interface that includes vivid cover art, information on plot synopsis, genre, and rating and advanced search, sorting and filtering. Our intent was to provide an experience like XBMC on your iPad.

Last week we released a Live HD TV option using an optional plug in USB Tuner ($49.99) that lets you view any HD channel using an antenna or clear QAM over cable (in the US).

Additional features include:
1) support for DVD ripped to .iso and VIDEO_TS folders
2) Airplay support.
3) Support for 1080P Blu-ray rips at up to 15Mbps
4) DLNA Support.

I think there is room for both approaches in the market. If all you want is occasional access to a few videos, the cheap and cheerful software solutions will get the job done. However, if you have a laptop, don't want to leave your PC on while you are away or want to use your PC while another family member is watching a video, then we think that the jetstreamhd is the solution for you.
