Thanks for the clarification and the correction of my invalid assumption. Upon reading the linked article on HDCP, it becomes apparent that HDCP 2.2 sources would require a HDCP 2.2 display in order to view Blu-ray and 4k UHD content. That could cause issues with newer UHD players and older TVs.
While HDCP and HDMI versions are not the same there are some similarities between 1.x and 2.x versions. The main one being that 2.x versions of both are required on both devices for 4k UHD content. Another is that versions 2.2 are required for full support of 4k UHD content. Anything less could result in loss of resolution, loss of features or complete failure of playback.
