I don't know about other people but SLRs are just too expensive and cumbersome for my lack of expertise in photography. I've had it with point and shoot cameras as well. It only takes a couple of years for them to become outdated by cell phone cameras. I could now purchase a low end DSLR for what I paid for my original digital camera and the specs on that are so obsolete I feel like a fool for buying it. The bottom line is that phone cameras are good enough for most people, especially those who would otherwise not own a camera.
It's interesting to note that the opposite portrait vs landscape issue existed with conventional cameras. Inexperienced camera users would take everything in landscape mode, even portraits. I know someone who had that happen with their wedding photos. Now they wish they had hired a professional.
