I can not comment specifically about Freedom Mobile (formerly known as Wind Mobile) But on any other provider I've used, making a call to check your voice mail uses local air time, so if you have a bucket of minutes, it will be taken from your minutes. Toll Free numbers are NOT charged long distacne, and can be used to check your voice mail from anywhere in canada, but also use air time minutes, unless otherwise specified by your local mobile provider, so you must read the fine print to see if they waive the airtime charges for voice mail, highly unlikely, but its always a good idea to check just in case.
