No mention of HD though. You'd think with today's technology they'd be able to use slightly less than broadcast quality cameras in order to save a few bucks. Who'd notice with the compression the broadcasters are using anyway. Of course you might see it on OTA broadcasting.

If they can do it with Survivor, they can do it with Amazing Race. CBS is being cheap. I guess Survivor get bigger ratings so they get HD.

The camera men on survivor don't have to get into taxis, get on airplanes, chase contestants up hill.

I wish they'd take a page from 'Cops' which has been doing passable SD-WS for many years now. Use that for the most difficult and mobile shots, and use true HD cameras for the many locations that they are able to set up in advance. While it might cost a bit more and be a bit harder, it's certainly attainable.

Excellent points.

TAR in SD only hasn't really been a big issue for me until I saw this seasons Survivor where I find it really made a difference.

As you point out, Cops seems to do a great job, although it may be a 2-man team (or more in a chase car) which is definitely easier than on TAR. For the challenges and other stationary points though it should be possible, but they do need to be as inconspicuous as possible as often the biggest challenge is just finding the spot to begin with. A whole production crew standing around might give it away )

Since I don't know anything about professional cameras.....How would this make a difference? Are HD cameras that much bigger and heavier than the once they already use?

I don't know if CBS is being cheap though. To me it seems as if they were the first network that really went mainstream with all their primetime shows to be shot in HD. They produce all their football games in HD now, along with other sports, including basketball, and they were the first to show every single shot for golf in HD - all using broadcast cameras and no cheap handheld HD cams. They even aired 2 different golf touraments in HD one weekend back in the summer with every single shot being in HD!

Sure they still have a few shows left in SD like The Amazing Race, but it's only a matter of time before it's all HD as well. I can't wait myself for it to be in HD, as I find CBS to have the best picture quality out of all the networks.

IN HD

According to TitanTV's listings for Sunday night, it says that Amazing Race is in HD.

I recall reading somewhere--probably in the forums here @ digitalhome.ca--that Sony paid for the HD cameras used on Survivor. Combine that with the points mentioned above, and it's really not a fair comparison. Plus, TAR would easily require a lot more cameras than Survivor.

Don't get me wrong. I'd love to see TAR in HD. The locations they visit make it a program well suited to HD. Unfortunately it's just not there yet.

Short of attaining HD for the entire show, the best option to me is Neild's idea--SD widescreen "in-car" with the teams, with HD "on location".

Sony did pony up for the HD Cameras for Survivor. Hopefully one day TAR will get a sponser but based upon the current state of the economy, you might have to wait a year or two.
