Recorded and watched one of the Cousteau programmes that was excellent on PBS before PBS started having their issues.
On NG it was:
- a bit washed out
- it had a large ghost when panning (similar to the PBS ghosting, but one big ghost instead of several smaller ones)
- also a bit of smearing
- the DD5.1 sound wasn't as good as I remember on PBS. The rears were almost inaudible for the entire programme.
- It didn't look HD crisp at all.
When the commercials came on, the colour was much more vivid.
Hasn't this been the fate of every new HD channel with every provider?
Why don't <provider> have <program>? What are they thinking? If they don't get it by tomorrow noon, I'll leave. Hope they keep hockey! -Stage 2-:
<Provider> announces <program>. They better do it right! High bitrate, AC3, no dropouts, no ghosting, etc. Or I'll leave. Don't forget hockey! -Stage 3-:
WTF is that? Is this what they call high definition? You can't watch it. Crappy sound. SD is better! It is just a waste of bandwidth!
And where is hockey? I don't care about copyright! I want it 24/7! Customer is always right! No, I'm definitely leaving today!
They should have gotten <program> instead! How long can one wait for it!
Go to -Stage 1-.
Just as an FYI, many programmes were shot on film and then telecined to tape (usually 1080p/24). This qualifies as "HD" in the same way that films qualify as "HD". It's only been recently (a few years) that some (more and more recently) programming is shot directly to HD tape.
The above comment is not directly about Kenny/Spenny since I don't have details of their process.
Its too early to crap on these new channels. Its best to wait a few months to assess the technical quality of the HD content (PQ and audio), and the content itself (unique, interesting material). See you in february.
WRT transfering film to HD tape, the format of the film has to be bigger than 16mm or the results look grainy and washed out....this is my observation.
Yes rogers will be carrying showcase hd witch is a bit of a shock.Showcase is not seen as a primer channel.I am looking forward to wgnhd.
IMHO Showcase has the best original programming of any channel in Canada with shows such as Trailer Park Boys and Rent a Goalie, plus they often air good movies. That beats CBC, Global, CTV, at least as far as I am concerned.
I haven't watched WGN but doesn't their content primarily consists of reruns of shows from commercial TV -i.e. Home Improvement, Home Videos, etc. That's a premier channel?
