I think its not only the compression from Buffalo transmission but the signal feed that they are receiving this just adds to the poor picture quality.

I compared the feed to Rochester and while switching back and forth its the same crappy/poor picture quality on both Pbs stations.

I used to enjoy watching pbs now I hardly watch it. I think more board member here should be emailing or calling Pbs to voice the poor picture quality they are seeing.

If nobody calls and emails then they will think the few people have called they can live with it.

Call and speak to Fred I gave up as he did say they are waiting on a new encoder. But the picture was never like this before so it must be the feed they are receiving that just adds to the compression. They need more bandwidth atleast 15mps.

When I spoke to him about by 1280x1080i he flipped the switch back the same evening to 1920x1080i.

email to PBS

I just sent this email to PBS HQ, [email protected].
Hi,
I watch & enjoy your WNED Buffalo PBS HD programs through Rogers cable in Toronto Canada. For a while now there has been a problem with bad ghosting on panned shots. I have emailed WNED twice but got no response. Can you tell me if you know about this problem & what is being done about it.
Thanks, XXXXX

Looks like that link is not working

As previously mentioned in this thread, WNED have contacted PBS central about the issue and advised us that it will "take some time" for PBS Central to correct the problem. I'll let it go a few more weeks and recontact WNED with whatever news there is at the time.

It would be good for people to send e-mails to PBS Central, if there is proper e-mail address...

WNED may ignore e-mails for now since it's beyond their control.

57 the funny thing is that if WNED said they did not change anything different in transmission then what did PBS central do or did to affect the picture quality so much.

It's really so sad that the picture quality of Pbs has fallen down so bed.

I hardly ever watch it now.

If we knew what PBS central did, we could tell them how to fix it, or they could fix it, since it seems to affect all affiliates.

I assume that since it happened in the past few months, they should be able to retrace their steps and see what they changed.

response from WNED

I got this response from Joe.

Sorry about your previous email - it must have been lost in the shuffle. The "ghosting" has been traced to the feed from PBS network, and they have been made aware of the problem. FYI, many of the
programs on PBS-HD were not originally recorded in HD, so they have been "upconverted" (many from SD, some from other flavors of HD, and probably some from other formats as well). The upconversion
process is not perfect, and artifacts (such as motion "smearing" and "ghosting") are usually the result. These artifacts will vary depending on the type of upconversion taking place which is (of
course) based on the format of the original recording. As you can imagine, under these circumstances it is very difficult to really "pin it down" to a single problem.

Sorry I can't give you a more definite answer. We suspect that there is more than one problem going on here - the nature of upconversion plus some other issue(s). We have been under the impression
that this problem has been getting better as of late - hopefully the folks at PBS are on to something.

Thanks for taking the time to write -

Best regards,

Joe Puma

As I stated earlier, I really dislike the fact that Joe keeps referring to the upconversion. The issue is plain as day on true HD programmes too, therefore, the upconversion should not be the issue. Also, previously upconverted programmes didn't exhibit this problem.

Sugarman, you may wish to reply to Joe with these comments - it may help them troubleshoot...

He may be correct that there is more than one issue.

I don't buy that upconversion excuse either. Perhaps PBS CENTRAL is doing cost cutting on their entire signal distribution & are looking at ways around it to get acceptable results without too many viewers noticing it. Remember Joe admitted they (WNED) were down rezing their signal when Yaamon called him on it. To which they at least went back to full rez output which made it somewhat better. Joe might just be preaching the party line, it sounds like a good excuse for the general public. It would be pretty sad if after this amount of time they couldn't fix a legitimate problem.
I'll tell Joe about what I saw today in HD & why that would still be an issue. On the bright side, at least we know it's not a ROGERS issue.

What's really strange is there is no mention of this particular problem (that I can find) over on the AVS forum. We are hearing that this is a general PBS problem but there are no complaints from viewers in other locations.....very strange....makes you wonder.....

There are probably more Canadians that watch PBS than Americans.

I started a thread on another forum, since I also didn't see anything "down south" and some people did confirm seeing the issue, however, not many people seem to watch PBS.

From what I can see and reason, the problem is from Pbs central.

Watching Pbs from Buffalo and Rochester they both display the same problems.

This is using my ota antenna setup.

There must be some kind of compression that Pbs central is doing to the signal.

ok is this ghosting your all talking about the 'motion blur' that is always in the picture on PBS HD? Thats the issue I've always had with PBS HD and it sucks.

ie if Nova is on, and you see a still shot of the stars, they are all white dots on black. Then once the camera starts to move, they turn into little streamy lines. Any camera movement on PBS HD always results in motion blur on the image for me.

Yes, the problem is "motion blur" and it started a few months ago on all PBSHD programming. Before this point in time there was no problem.
