response from WNED
I got this response from Joe.
Sorry about your previous email - it must have been lost in the shuffle. The "ghosting" has been traced to the feed from PBS network, and they have been made aware of the problem. FYI, many of the
programs on PBS-HD were not originally recorded in HD, so they have been "upconverted" (many from SD, some from other flavors of HD, and probably some from other formats as well). The upconversion
process is not perfect, and artifacts (such as motion "smearing" and "ghosting") are usually the result. These artifacts will vary depending on the type of upconversion taking place which is (of
course) based on the format of the original recording. As you can imagine, under these circumstances it is very difficult to really "pin it down" to a single problem.
Sorry I can't give you a more definite answer. We suspect that there is more than one problem going on here - the nature of upconversion plus some other issue(s). We have been under the impression
that this problem has been getting better as of late - hopefully the folks at PBS are on to something.
Thanks for taking the time to write -

Not much "News" here but at least they're still trying.
