If you read the applications for DT frequencies that are available on the CRTC website, you will note that there are questions on format (HD vs SD) and that all have agreed to go HD, thus far. So, CBC will broadcast in HD. The question will be as to how much programming will be produced and aired in HD vs how much will be upconverted SD.

Fair enough but how long has this feed existed for? I'm glad to see CBC HD content on CBC HD. Kind of strange you had to break the "law" to see what your tax dollars are help funding.

Today starting at 6am was day one. In addition to the Newsroom in HD, Cornation Street in ED WideScreen was also a treat. Great to see additional OTA choices over what's been available todate.

Okay, now that the newly-minted CBC-HD has already broadcast more original HD content than Global-HD, and is doing it OTA, aren't providers like BEV obligated to add it to their lineups?

At least I know that CBC HD won't simsub any of the U.S HD networks in the future unlike CTV HD, Global HD etc.

CBC HD will also, broadcast original HD programming not found on any other HD channel in Canada. I think that's useful and beneficial.

I don't think The Newsroom was in actual HD. A good DVD-quality SD upconversion, yes.

There is occasionally simsubbing on the part of CBC when they air a movie at the same time as a U.S. broadcaster.

602 & 606 on Videtron

Both Channel were working last night
  • Saw Coronation Street in SD 16:9
  • SRC - in French - had serious sound feedback problems - surround echo? - for Virginie and Auberge du chien noir
  • Since SRC don't mention anywhere on their web anything about the new channel, maybe they consider themselves in «pre-launch» mode
  • Give SRC and CBC a chance? ! !

Got the canned response this morning:

I have forwarded your suggestion to our programming department for future consideration.
That seems a poor response, given that they are airing HD (or at least widescreen) content. I'm going to pursue this with them some more.

Does this mean in a "windowboxed" format with bars all around? Or Filling the 16:9 screen, but not HD.

I was full screen, but very standard definition...

But comparing side by side, with dual tuner - one on the analog channel and the other with the HP PVR on 606 - the 16:9 version looked like an extracted blowup of the 4:3 picture... no frame around....

Maybe these are "filmed" like Degrassi (on CTV), (perhaps with 16mm) which also doesn't "look" HD, even though it's 16:9.

Coronation Street would be taped in standard 576i 16:9 widescreen; just like most stuff from the UK. Over there they broadcast terrestrially, digitally at 16:9 576i, and analogue using the old 4:3 625 line. No real signs of HD there yet, but they have been broadcasting widescreen digitally since the late 1990's. Stuff like Coronation Street would be shown as 14:9 letterbox on a 4:3 signal; and that it is how it is probably shown here too, i would think (though I confess I've never caught any Coronation Street).

Not sure what CBC is getting from Granada; but in theory, they should be able to get a slightly better picture on the 1080i HD picture compared to the analogue SD, given that a) it is 576i compared to 480i; and be, with the usual 14:9 letterbox (I'd assume), they are only using (if I can do math) 411 lines instead of 480 lines ... or 576 (depending on what format has been provided).
