Dr.Dave - Would you say this is the new normal, that what was once a single TV season (Sept. to May) is now promoted as being two seasons?

I note that this has been common with reality shows but it now seems to be increasingly common with scripted shows as well.

Thanks for all the work you do posting these updates.

I sure hope not. Sept - may, 22-30 eps should be the normal for a single season network show.

I appreciate the thanks Exid0r.

I don't think the typical 22-episode season is going away. For one thing, it is extremely lucrative for the studios. They get much more per episode once the series gets 88 episodes and is eligible for 5 days a week scheduling as stripped syndication (4 seasons x 22 episodes).

I think the networks are being a bit more flexible with the length of seasons. I get the impression that Sleepy Hollow was always intended to be a 13-episode season. That's why Fox ordered 13 episodes for the second season very early, instead of the typical "back 9" to make a typical 22-episode season.

The Following also makes sense as a shorter season - 15 episodes each year. It's very intense and running 22 episodes would probably cause the viewers to become jaded and would dull the effect. Plus Kevin Bacon probably didn't want the grind of doing a full 22-episode season .

the critics were saying that Sleepy Hollow would be bust. Almost didn't watch it. But I did and really got into it. I think 13 episodes is good, Sometimes 22 episodes is too many for ceratin series as the writers run out of ideas and then we start seeing all kinds of stupid plots.

Dr Dave, I too watch The Following and agree with what you said. If it had 22episodes I would tune it out.

Thank you for the replies.

I must admit to being a bit confused on this practice of a season having fewer episodes. i.e. 10-15 as opposed to 20-26

I realize now I was thinking the second season of Sleepy Hollow was starting in January, but in fact it is a different program (The Following) having a second season premiere in what was Sleepy Hollow's timeslot.

Sorry for the confusion.
