This has been happening for some time now. My understanding is that you can disable it...

Roof-top mounted Antennas Direct DB8e & C5, Channel Master 7777 preamp, Siemens surge protection. TiVo Roamio DVR

My understanding is that it's a totally separate service from the customer's Internet, in that it uses neither bandwidth nor data from the customer. It's no problem for them to build a box with a separate MAC address for the public WiFi, so they're just another customer on the shared cable.

I haven't lost my mind. It's around here...somewhere...

Shaw announced the secondary WiFi network feature a couple of years ago on their Hitron and XB6 modems. It is only accessible to Freedom Mobile customers (their cellphone brand). Shaw Internet customers can disable the feature if they choose.
