DST For Most Of Us This Weekend

DST starts again for most of us this coming weekend. Don't forget to turn your "clocks" ahead one hour before going to bed Saturday. That's, of course, any timekeeping devices that don't get their own signal or are programmed correctly to change the time appropriately.

Some older devices may not change on the proper date since we have one month more DST since 2007. For those older devices with incorrect firmware, I have them set to "manual" instead of "auto DST" and I set them manually twice a year. You could see if there is new firmware available for your older devices. Some older devices may change to DST the first Sunday in April for this reason (old firmware). Set those to "manual" if possible.

For items with new firmware, you may still need to enable "auto time zone (or DST) updating" or similar functionality. Some devices have a sequence of button presses to change to/from DST, rather than changing the actual time, although it's a good idea to check the accuracy of the time.

On Sunday morning check all your devices and make sure that any PVR scheduled recordings are still set up properly. Some devices like telephones may require you to turn them on/off or will reset with the first incoming call, etc. For many people with digital devices, this may require digging out those operating manuals.

Whenever I purchase a new device with an operating manual, I also download that manual from the manufacturer's website to my computer and put it in an appropriately-labelled file.

PVRs:

For PVRs, it's probably a good idea not to set any new recordings for next week until Sunday after the time change. Many PVRs, due to the way the firmware works (or doesn't work properly), do not set new recordings well right around the time change. Most PVRs should handle series recordings properly since this time change is nothing new, but again it's a good idea to check on Sunday. Some recordings may currently show the "incorrect" times or "incorrect" programmes because they may be off by an hour when viewed before the DST change. These should self-correct on Sunday morning. The different firmware on different devices from different providers will/may handle all these issues differently.

I'm posting this a bit earlier than usual because some people are already seeing these sorts of effects on their PVRs.

It might be a good idea to reboot PVRs on Sunday morning, after the time change. That will update the guide and recordings schedule on most PVRs.

Navigatr & DST

As several have noted here & on RCF, in Navigatr all programs after 2am Sunday morning are showing the times one hour before the correct time, and Navigatr is showing the non-existent 2am-3am time block.
I thought I'd check via the web interface to Manage My PVR and see what that showed.

Well (probably because it interfaces with Navikrap) it shows the following time slots for Sunday morning for my 9865 PVR:
1:00 AM 1:30 AM 1:00 AM 1:30 AM 1:00 AM 1:30 AM 1:00 AM 1:30 AM 1:00 AM 1:30 AM 1:00 AM

Yes - 1:00 AM appears 6 times !
Then arrow right to next page and it starts with:
6:00 AM 6:30 AM 7:00 AM 7:30 AM 8:00 AM 8:30 AM 9:00 AM 9:30 AM 10:00 AM 10:30 AM 11:00 AM

I checked the AnyPlace TV App on my Android phone.
Of course the App stopped responding/crashed the first FIVE times I tried to scroll over to Sunday morning, EVERY TIME when I was trying to scroll to 9pm Saturday. If you select Sunday and scroll backwards in time, the App hangs/crashes when you get to 8pm Saturday.
After reloading and trying yet again (SLOWER) I see the App is ALREADY screwed up, showing Saturday evening shows (after 9pm) an hour earlier than the correct time (Global/NBC:Saturday Night Live at 10:30pm, CTV:CTV National News at 10pm, etc.).
Programs for 8pm Saturday to 2am Sunday show as different times on the Navigatr PVR itself vs the AnyPlace TV App.

So it looks like the App screws up from 9pm Saturday evening.
Let me guess, the Einsteins who programmed the App coded it to start DST at 2am UTC (9pm EST) ? - hence the App showing incorrect times, or freezing/crashing, when you try to scroll right to get to 9pm Saturday (or scroll left to get earlier than 8pm Saturday if starting from Sunday).

It appears Rogers can't get ANYTHING right, and can't even screw things up CONSISTENTLY !

I have the SA8300HD and see the same weirdness on my Manage PVR web app. But my PVR Guide just skips the hour from 2:00 am to 3:00 am, as does the Zap2it Guide. Looks like everything was right with the world until Navigatr joined in with its own set of rules.

I don't see any weirdness on the Web Manager PVR interface, or on my iPad app. Both show the times "skipped" at 2:00AM and 2:30AM, just like on the 8300HD itself. Also the 11PM CTV and Global news programmes show properly this evening.

The times for my scheduled recordings for next week show "correctly" on the Manage PVR Web interface and on the iPad RAPTV.

On my 9865 itself, however, there are still times showing for 2:00AM and 2:30AM, as well as all the recording times for next week being off by one hour. I've got my fingers crossed this will all "correct" on Sunday morning. The CTV/Global news at 11 shows at 11PM for tonight - nothing weird at 9PM - perhaps someone was looking at Sunday instead of Saturday?

Since my experience differs from the above, perhaps Rogers are working on this today.

This is what I'm still seeing with Windows 7.

But the app on my Android tablet just looks as if there is no time change, no hour skipped.

That is indeed strange. My Web browser Manage PVR is now showing the same as yours, but RAPTV on the iPad is showing the "correct" 1:30AM to 3AM skip.

They must be working on it since it's changing all the time. (I definitely checked the "Manage PVR" web interface carefully this morning just before posting my previous post.)

The Web Manage PVR scheduled recording times for next week are now off by an hour (they were correct this morning when I looked), while RAPTV on the iPad is correct still. Very Weird.

On the iOS app, it shows 1:00 1:30 and then 3:00.

I just rechecked all 3.

Navigatr guide on the 9865 still showing 2am-3am Sunday and all programs after that are showing times one hour earlier than actual.

ManagePVR on the web (Windows 7 64 bit, Chrome 49.0.2623.87) is showing:
10:30PM 11:00PM 11:30PM 12:00AM 12:30AM 1:00AM 1:30AM 3:00AM 3:30AM 4:00AM - AND the 3:30AM & 4:00AM columns are all blank.
When I scroll right and check programs at 6PM (CTV News Kitchener for example) it is showing as 5PM, everything is showing an hour earlier (like Navigatr's Guide).
Now if I try that with Firefox 44.0.2 AND 45.0 (what I was using when I posted last night) I get a page showing:
10:30PM 11:00PM 11:30PM 12:00AM 12:30AM 1:00AM 1:30AM 1:00AM 1:30AM 1:00AM 1:30AM (1:00AM-1:30AM repeats)
and the next page to the right in the grid is:
3:30AM 4:00AM 4:30AM 5:00AM 5:30AM 6:00AM 6:30AM 7:00AM 7:30AM 8:00AM 8:30AM
Appears it shows differently in different browsers.

Back on Rogers AnyPlace TV Home Edition Android App and it's still crashing trying to scroll right past 9pm Saturday, and if you switch to Sunday and scroll left back to Saturday there is a 2:00AM-3:00AM on the grid, it still has programs for Saturday evening from 9PM and later showing an hour earlier than the correct time AND an hour is missing/programs showing shorter than actual time between 9pm & 10pm (AGAIN do they think DST starts at 2:00AM UTC ? That appears to be how it is working), The App STILL crashes when it hits 8pm Saturday and you try scroll left to go earlier.
Specifics on /programs showing shorter than actual time between 9pm & 10pm":
TVO has Churchill's Desert War: The Road to El Alamein showing in Navigatr as 9:00pm-10:30pm
Global has Double Cross showing as 9:00pm-11:00pm
YET in the AnyPlace TV Home Edition (on Android) these show as:
TVO has Churchill's Desert War: The Road to El Alamein showing as 9:00pm-9:30pm
Global has Double Cross showing as 9:00pm-10:00pm
AND all following programs show an hour early.
So the one hour removed there is 9:00pm-10pm and not 2:00am-3:00am.
And of course 9:00pm-10:00pm EST is 02:00am-03:00am UTC.
And trying to scroll right on the grid after 9pm Saturday or left before 8pm Saturday seems to hang/crash the App.
Seems half the programmers these days couldn't program their way out of a wet paper bag.

Just as the Web interface seems to display different results between Chrome & Firefox, no doubt those using the AnyPlace TV Home Edition on Android and iPhone/iPad are seeing different results too. I doubt this has ANYTHING to do with Rogers "trying" to fix it today.

PS - in a web browser why, when you are already signed in to MyRogers, do you have to "Sign in to Rogers Anyplace TV" AGAIN when you go to AnyPlace TV?
And THEN when you do you get a page saying "Sorry, the page you requested could not be found" and you have to click the ManagePVR link near top centre of the page?
(Rhetorical question I suppose, just more lousy inadequate poorly tested software on Rogers part).

A variation of a certain politician's "Because it's 2016" answer, "Because it's Rogers". You have to sign in separately for RCF, My Rogers, even whether you want to see your Cable or PayGo account. As if different people could all be using the same login and password. And when that doesn't work, you delete all Rogers cookies and start over. "Because it's Rogers".

It seems that all is OK with Rogers/Navigatr, despite all the weirdness we saw yesterday. Even my reminders were correct this year, which was not the case a few years ago.

It's really strange how different ways of accessing the IPG showed all those different iterations yesterday - differences in browsers, RAPTV vs Web-based Manage PVR vs the IPG on Navigatr, vs the IPG on SARA, etc.

Looks like the people over on Shaw Direct were not as lucky:

57 - you spoke too soon.
I might have known Rogers/Espial were too incompetent to get through a DST change without an issue.
Check the times of all your recordings made prior to the DST change.
They now all show one AFTER the actual recording time.

Mine look fine and some of them have already recorded fine (SuperBike this morning, IndyCar this afternoon - PreRace and Race.)

No mention of issues here or over on Rogers' Forum.

No, not newly recorded programs or scheduled recordings, recordings you had prior to 2am this morning.
Check old recordings and you will see they show an hour after the correct recorded time.
I confirmed this on my 9865, 8642 & 4642. Then rebooted all 3 boxes and older (pre-DST change) recordings all show the recorded time an hour after the actual time they were recorded.
No doubt Navigatr stores recording times for programs in UTC, then applies the CURRENT UTC offset to display the time, instead of doing what anyone with half a brain would do and record the time in UTC AND the offset at the time the recording was made.
