digital channel on 46?

I picked up a digital channel on 46 the last couple of nights. The signal isn't strong enough to lock. From looking at stampeder's canadian channel list, the channel belongs to CRC, and is located at the Shirley's Bay facility, and it's not very high.
Anyone else pick anything up on this channel?
I'm in southern Kanata, maybe someone closer can see what they're broadcasting.

CBOT-DT was down again this evening (19h45) when I went to tune in the hockey game. It looks like the same thing that happened a few weeks ago, strong signal, but no MPEG transport stream.

Channel 46

I just did a channel scan, and found a very strong signal (around 85% compared to 70-75% for CBC/SRC) on channel 46. I tuned in, and right now they're playing some Chinese movie in HD (720p). Industry Canada's database shows three transmitters belonging to CRC (Communications Research Centre Canada, I assume): one by the Marshes Golf Club in Kanata, one by Fisher & Prince of Wales, and one by St. Laurent & Montreal. Does anyone else know anything about this channel?

I think you may be seeing a test of Single Frequency Network (SFN) technology. Multiple digital transmitters all operating on a single RF channel. I recall CRC had an interest in the technology. The idea is to improve reception in weak spots by adding transmitters rather than increasing power in a single transmitter. The technology should also be useful in mountainous areas where single channel repeaters can be used to extend coverage beyond geographical obstructions.

Question Status of Omni 1 and Omni 2 DTV in Ottawa?

Does anyone have any updated news on the status of Omni 1 and Omni 2 DTV broadcasts for Ottawa now that the CRTC decision on OTA has been made?

Well according to Broadcasting Decisions CRTC 2005-202 and 2005-203:

Quote:
The transmitter must be operational at the earliest possible date and in any event no later than 24 months from the date of this decision, unless a request for an extension of time is approved by the Commission before 19 May 2007.
I may be wrong, but I suspect that since 19 May 2007 has come and gone and to the best of my knowledge the CRTC has not approved an extension, the DTV licenses have now expired and Rogers will need to apply for new licenses.

I suspect (and this is only a guess on my part) that most repeaters will do a flash cut over to DTV in either late 2010 or early 2011. There is hope that since OMNI.1 and CITY will have to change channel numbers in Ottawa, that they will start broadcasting digitally before they shut down their analog transmitters, but only time will tell.

Sorry for taking so long to get back to you. I somehow missed your original post.

tvfool uses information from the FCC and is great for US stations, but the information about the Canadian stations (at least those in Ottawa) is inaccurate.

Currently only CBOT and CBOFT are broadcasting digitally in Ottawa. There was hope the the OMNIs were going to broadcast digitally, but their license has expired and I haven't seen an attempt to renew it. I wouldn't expect any of the other existing stations to start broadcasting digitally for at least a couple years, but I may be proven wrong. In my opinion, our best hope is Sun TV as they have applied for both analog and digital repeaters in Ottawa. If approved, they could theoretically be broadcasting digitally within a year.

As for the PBS stations you will need good elevation and a good antenna to pick up WNPI, and WCFE is currently off air because its tower collapsed in April. When it does go back on air, it will be even more difficult to receive. The other American stations are very difficult to receive, but the situation may improve in 2009 when WWNY reverts back to channel 7.

I hope this helps.

Still Hope for OMNI DTV in Ottawa

I was looking through the CRTC's website and noticed that it seems as though applications granted approval pursuant to streamlined procedures aren’t published until between one and three months after they are approved. For example, Broadcasting Public Notice CRTC 2007-60 was published 7 June 2007, but it only contains "Broadcasting applications authorized by the Commission during the period 1 March 2007 to 30 April 2007."

As a result, we won't be able to see if Rogers applied for an extension until early August. If they did apply for an extension, that would speed things up a bit, but we likely wouldn't see the digital OMNI's on the air for at least a year.

HD in Ottawa

As everyone else, I'm disappointed in the lack of OTA HD digital in Ottawa, rabbit ears work fine for the limited stations I can recieve at this time. I will keep the HD 32 inch LCD that I bought for watching Hockey on CBC and after summer ends and winter hibernation begins probably look into satellite reception. I have to admit though turning on HD and watching some of the HD broadcasts on CBC still delivers an awesome picture!

Have a GIDDAY EH! John

At least we have more digital stations than most Canadian cities (Toronto is the only city with more local digital stations). Things will be much better in 4 years time so I guess we will just have to be patient.

But with American stations easily available, who needs more local ones (e.g. Montréal)?

Montréal, Windsor, Toronto and to some extent Vancouver (not easy but possible in some locations) are the exception. Most Canadian cities cannot get American stations easily. Calgary and Edmonton don't get any, and Winnipegers struggle to get one PBS station. Of course here in Ottawa, most people can only get PBS reliably (if that).

Hmm. Looking at the Listings Of Canadian OTA Television Stations, I stumbled across 4 new listings:

ON London 26 LONDON 53 INDE 425720 812120 271.7 310000 542.00 Z
ON London 19 LONDON 54 INDE 425720 812120 281.7 4300 500.00
ON Ottawa 54 OTTAWA 53 INDE 453011 755102 332.9 80000 710.00 +
ON Ottawa 62 OTTAWA 54 INDE 453011 755102 332.9 4600 758.00

I don't know when they first appeared (Stampeder, can you find out?) but the details correspond to Sun TV's 4 applications. Could this indicate imminent approval, or is this a normal part of the application process?
