'Shudder' horror streaming service to launch in Canada

AMC is bringing Shudder to Canada later this month, as the first step in its expansion outside of the U.S.

The monthly subscription is $4.99 or $49.99 a year (Canadian dollars.)

I wonder if this will have any kind of impact on Netflix?

Maybe this will be what the more or less defunct Terror TV could have been.

I doubt it. I took a quick look at the horror genre in Netflix and it's not even close. Real horror fans certainly aren't getting their fix from Netflix. (I'm not a horror fan, so I'm just going by the titles.) Netflix seems to carry more mainstream titles.

It might have an effect on The Cult Movie Network, which is a Canadian company that is only available on MTS TV AFAIK, but does have a streaming service for the rest of the country.

So when this channel shuts down in a few years, will they rename it "Shutter"?

Is that $4.99 per month in U.S. dollars or CDN ? HST on top of the price ?

Here is the official press release from Oct. 20:

Shudder Canada Launches
Quote:
SHUDDER’s growing library of curated horror is available ad-free and for unlimited viewing on Shudder’s website, mobile apps for iOS and Android, Chromecast, Apple TV, and the Roku platform with a free one week-trial or $4.99 monthly/ $49.99 yearly membership, and more platforms being added in the months after launch.
The price is in Canadian dollars. My guess is there is no GST/HST since they are a foreign internet service like Netflix. The Twitter account in post 1 is very active so you can ask them if you really want to be sure.

Shudder not working with Airplay

Hi I set up Shudder to give it a try. When I airplay to my tv I get a black screen. I can play the movie on my Ipad Air and I can airplay the screen to my tv but as soon as I start the video I get nothing. I do get audio though.

I sent them a question but no answer yet. Could it be my HDMI cable?

I'm not an Apple user, but I set up an Apple TV 3 for someone a few month ago and saw that it was possible to set up Airplay just for audio. Maybe this will help:

I think its more APP dependent.
I think its something they have to turn on/off in the app programming itself.

I know Shomi was initially that way.. where you could airplay the menus, etc.. but when you went to play, no go.

They got back to me. There is an issue with Apple TV 3. I got it in the Google Store instead and used my android box.

@Coasterdon thanks for letting us know where the problem was. I merged your thread with the main Shudder thread since it's a problem with the Shudder app.

The eight-episode Sky original production, A Discovery of Witches, will make its debut in the U.S. and Canada on a date to be confirmed, with all episodes available simultaneously on both Sundance Now and Shudder, marking the first partnership of this kind for the two SVOD services. SundanceTV has also acquired second window linear rights to the series. (Source) No mention of linear TV rights in Canada.

Shudder Greenlights Creepshow" TV Series, scheduled to debut on Shudder in 2019. (Source) No specific mention that the series will be available in Canada.

Sky One's A Discovery of Witches tv show

Dr. Dave thank you for posting about Sky One's A Discovery of Witches tv show will be streaming on Sundance Now and Shutter. I will be signing up to see A Discovery of Witches tv show. It will premiere on Shudder and Sundance Now in early 2019. I was wondering will there ever be any linear rights in Canada for A Discovery of Witches tv series. I know when they announced it yesterday in the United States it would be aired on Sundance tv and the eight episodes would be aired on a weekly basis. I was wondering if any linear rights for A Discovery of Witches tv series will ever be picked up here in Canada.
