Let's get real. Bell's plan is a highly regulated IPTV product, not an OTT product like Hulu or HBO Go. There is no comparison between these services. In addition, at $100/mo, the Bell service is no cord cutter's bargain. As usual, Bell is lying about their offerings in order to distort the marketplace.

Now, let's get back on topic.

So this will impact ... customers who can only afford one Netflix playing device which happens to be a 'rooted' Android box.

Seems pointless, wouldn't someone who specifically wanted to use a 'rooted' Android box (for whatever supposed purpose) simply play Netflix via another device?

The point is to try to stop users from using rooted Android devices to "rip" Netflix content, particularly those that support offline downloads. Any Android boxes connected to TVs that are used for playback that are disabled are simply collateral damage.

Sorry, but I root my google/nexus phones and pay for 4 screens and use chromecast dongles. This is a piss off. That said, there is already a work around.

So whats the difference between android boxes that can only stream, but not download?

True some android boxes might have be illegal(as hacked getting stuff for free) while other android boxes you pay for services. Now grant you some of that content(channels via Kodi) might not be legal in Canada IE SYFY,USA etc.

This could really backfire as it will impact many legitimate Netflix subscribers.

Furthermore, what's to stop Microsoft from sending out a windows update patch which could render MYHT boxes useless for home theatre as these boxes are rooted as well? This has troubling implications.

Here is one of examples how piracy affects networks.

If you actually researched something rather than do your usual shilling for Bell by blaming PIRATES you'd notice this networks problems began long BEFORE android boxes.

Ten Network casts 'significant doubt' on its viability after announcing $232m first-half loss - ABC News (Australian Broadcasting Corporation)

"That takes the total write-downs in the value of Ten's licences to $600 million in the past two years as advertising revenue continues to be eroded and consumed by multinational digital giants such as Facebook and Google."

Keep blaming pirates though Bev Fan, those dimes from Bell will add up.

@bev fan - Australian TV has to be a tricky business when compared to Canada. The main networks in Australia (7, 9, TEN) are kind of on the same business model as the Canadian commercial networks (CTV, Global, City), however, since they have different time zones then there U.S. and UK sources, they are not broadcasting shows during U.S. or UK prime time or at the same time. Therefore, if someone is a huge fan of a U.S. or UK show there, they could watch it illegally hours before it airs in Australia.

Australian networks seem to produce a lot more local content then Canadian networks - or I just find myself watching a lot of Australian reality shows. The country also has 1/3 less population then Canada.

It should be interesting what happens to TEN in the next while - it would be a sign of what is to come to Canadian networks.

The same claims were made about software piracy and music piracy. Further studies showed that the claimed losses were mostly fictitious. It turned out that many of the copies made were not lost sales or lost income because the product would not have been purchased by the people involved. Furthermore, victims of piracy inflated the value of the items copied by assuming maximum retail pricing that did not reflect the true market value of the loss. (This type of inflation is also seen in the reporting of crimes such as shoplifting and drug trafficking.) Once the so called victims of these crimes provided education, implemented up front compliance procedures and addressed consumer concerns the alleged losses became less of an issue.

I find it interesting the "bev fan" would promote facts provided by an industry that has been known to lie to promote its own interests, is known to be grossly mismanaged, often uses political influence to its own advantage and has been convicted of defrauding its own customers. Bell, in particular, has misbehaved so badly that public opinion of the company and its practices is very poor. It remind me of the now widespread business practice of promoting misinformation on social media in order to influence public opinion.

I guess all those Sony smart tv users, installing Kodi from Google Playstore, are now suspected pirates

Can Bev explain the idea of economical loss? If one loses less, is one's loss economical?

Exactly not every illegally downloaded or streamed Movie/TV program/ Software/Song means that person would have ever bought it to begin with.

The movie and recording industry has been using those trumped up numbers for years with no actual evidence to back up their claims.

Yes, piracy affects sales and company profits but not to the made up numbers that the industry's lobby groups try to claim.

Corporate greed is the undoing of most of these companies and started long before Bit Torrent and streaming.
