YouTube launches paid subscription channels

YouTube is betting Internet users will pay a couple of bucks per month to select from a broad range of genre content — from “Sesame Street,” “Inspector Gadget” and NatGeo Kids content to UFC mixed-martial arts fights and horror movies — supplied by an initial roster of 30 partners.

The channels will average around $2.99 per month, but will start as low as 99 cents monthly. A full list of the 53 channels is available at
YouTube will launch the subscription channels in 10 countries: U.S., Canada, U.K., Australia, Japan, Korea, France, Spain, Russia and Brazil. Individual channel providers have the option of which territories they offer their services.

This is a great concept and is the way TV should be heading. Unfortunately, I find the offerings far from compelling. Most of the "channels" have very limited content and, when compared to Netflix, are very poor value for the money. For example, I was happy to see HDNet but they only offer a few of their soft porn shows. Where are the concerts and other shows they produce? To get the range of programming that Netflix offers, if that's even possible with this service, the cost would be far in excess of $8.99/mo.

I think this just underscores what an amazing deal services like Netflix and Hulu are.

Its early days for py services on You Tube and at present its really just Google dipping their toes in the water to see what sticks. They need to monetise things more on You Tube, expect to see more and different models until they settle on one that works.

One catch? Will the movies or other content be edited?
Like will there be extreme violence or nudity.

Because according to the "Terms of Agreement" You Tube does not allow nudity on their web site?Hence even if you sub to one of these channels its still on You Tube, hence the Term Of Agreement clause?

there is lots of nudity on youtube it is a real grey area but if it shown in a non sexual manner it is supposed to be okay

But I have seen movies that seem to be nothing but softcore porn with million of views that they will not remove

and then there is a really disgusting foreign film called A Serbian Film which has been banned in lots of country's and should have lots of terms of service violations including nudity that has been uploaded by lots of different accounts and never gets taken down

this article talks about there policys
