CITY-TV Toronto HD Programming Discussion

its now been four shows in the last two days that are listed as HD on Citytv.com but have been showed in SD 4:3.

Paycheck last night
Cityline today
Battlestar Galatica tonight
Not Another Teen Movie tonight

it makes me think they are currently not able to show anything in HD due to technical problems or perhaps renovations for their upcoming new Hd broadcasts?

I was wondering the same thing... the BEV City channel on #803 had no HD version of BSG this evening. And was also hoping that the movie Kundun on the weekend would be shown in HD but was also a no-go.

ya something is definitely different, today at eight, they even showed their usual 'the following program is avaialbe in HD' clip before Stargate SG1 started, but still, their broadcast is window-boxed.

I remember reading not long ago that City is working on a new HD system that should be up within a week or two.. Perhaps this is just some start up glitches

PN50A530, Cogeco cable 6412 PVR, Onkyo TX-DS595, B&W Speakers, Harmony 880, Sony BDPS350

When is City going to fix their audio though? Hopefully with the new equipment in a few weeks.

Samsung LCD, Emotiva Lmc-1 pre-amp, Rotel RMB-1075 power amp, B&W Nautilus 805 "book shelf" speakers etc.

They are trying to launch BREAKFAST TV and the various other planned HD shows on the 25th if things go right but, it could take a bit longer.

It's not just OTA, it's the same on Rogers cable in Ottawa. I don't think I've ever seen any HD on CITY-HD. (Not counting the "wide screen" version of Hunt for Red October that was just the 4:3 version stretched out to make everyone look fat.)

if thats the case, then rogers isn't providing the same signal os CITY-HD OTA, because for Canadian standards, CITY shows plenty of HD content. There is usually at least 1 or 2 HD movies on City a week, sometimes more, and they also show most of the simucasts from the US in HD. Breakfast television is now in HD, and the rest of their local producitons are soon to come.

there just seems to be a few ie Battlestar Gallactica that aren't shown in HD for some reason.

I believe the movie "The Transporter" was HD and OAR 2.35 this evening. I surfed by earlier this evening.

http://www.citytv.com/toronto/tvschedule.aspx

Please check their schedule for HD programmes.

I see that on the 27th, the news at 11:30PM is scheduled to be HD.

Just to confirm, The Transporter was broadcast in HD, but despite the listings, BG was only in 480i/p (not sure).

The stations seem to consider HD an annoyance, with the lack of attention they seem to pay to proper playback. Ironic, since HD owners have the most money (in theory) to spend on advertisers products.

Point of clarification. All broadcasts by City HD are 1080i. Any SD material has been upconverted to 1080i. Nothing is broadcast on City-HD as 480i or p. This is true of all HD channels, they broadcast in their HD format 24/7. See the Digital Home FAQ (under Help) "HDTV Formats".

It is true that the orignal tape may have been 480i, but then again, it could have been filmed and then transferred to tape...
