Today the CRTC released a ruling that all Canadian news networks, including Sun News, must be available from all service providers by March 19, 2014. As MTS does not currently carry Sun News this will be a mandatory channel addition for them.

@CoryB

Although I don't have MTS, out of that list of missing HD channels I could see MTS add most of them with the exception of:

BET HD
Military HD
BBC World News HD

all the others I could see them adding them at some point.

Update to previous post: beIN Sports free preview extended to March 31, 2014 and will be $14.99 per month effective May 2014 (if that makes sense).

Sun News Network added to News package

MTS added the Sun News Network to its News channel package in standard definition on channel 143 and in high definition on channel 1143 (only available on MTS Ultimate TV).

In addition to Sun News Network, MTS's News channel group includes CTV News Channel, BNN (Business News Network), FOX News, MSNBC, CNBC, and Bloomberg Television. All seven channels are adjacent to each other, providing MTS TV customers with fast and convenient access to news and events.

Press Release.

It looks like MTS was able to negotiate a price that was low enough that they could add it to the existing NEWS package.

The addition of Sun News likely had nothing to do with being able to negotiate a low price, it was entirely driven by the CRTC must-carry ruling that required the channel to be added no later than March 19, 2014. MTS was also required to pay a "fair and commercially reasonable" fee for Sun News.

I know about the CRTC must-carry ruling, but it seems that Telus wasn't able to negotiate a "fair and commercially reasonable" fee for carriage in a package yet, so it's only available as an individual channel for $4/month.

Only offering Sun News is counter to the CRTC ruling which clearly stated it need to be included in a bundle. Perhaps CRTC has permitted Telus to offer it as a stand-alone channel while negotiations continue.

The must-carry deadline was March 19, the requirement to include it in the "best available discretionary package consistent with their genre and programming" is May 20.

I had forgotten there were 2 deadlines.
