I would personally assume it's the handset. When MTS fired up their new network, it was based on their original network coverage PLUS rogers network coverage (they share towers in Manitoba)

Plus I hate blackberrys.

Does anyone know when Churchill Manitoba will get 3G service?

According to their website:

4G will not be available in Bissett, Churchill, Middlebro, Split Lake, Oxford House, Snow Lake, Ebb & Flow, Fisher River / Koostatak, Long Spruce, Radisson, Henday, and Wuskwatim.

Although if Rogers ever operates 3G in Churchill, theoretically you could roam on that.

@Reed Solomon, I don't think Rogers has built any towers in Manitoba since the agreement on page 1 of this thread.

@kidnash84, the quote above was part of the original announcement so your best bet would probably be to contact MTS to see if they have any new plans for Churchill.

I wonder if and when MTS is ever going to upgrade these areas as noted from there coverage page? I would have thought that Churchill with the Eco Tourism would have been on the upgrade path.

Some locations will have CDMA coverage and 4G will not be available. The locations are as follows:

Middleboro
Churchill
Split Lake
Oxford House
Snow Lake
Bissett
Fisher River / Kooostatak
Ebb & Flow
Long Spruce
Henday
Radisson (North of Gillam)
Wuskwatim Dam (Hydro Site)

CDMA is essentially dead, and not just in Manitoba, with almost no new handsets coming out. I think long term MTS has few choices but to upgrade to HSP/LTE at these sites. It might be a matter of things like cost and access that has been preventing them.

MTS to launch faster 4G HSPA+ network in six new communities

MTS today announced plans to expand its 4G HSPA+ wireless network to six new rural Manitoba communities in 2014, including the town of Churchill. More than 4,000 people living and working in the following communities will benefit from this investment:
  • Ebb and Flow First Nation
  • Fisher River First Nation
  • Churchill
  • Snow Lake
  • Bissett
  • Middlebro
News Release.

Under CDMA there is a gap in coverage between Steinbach and Middlebro just outside of Piney on Hwy 12 north. Looks like the tower at Vita does not reach that area either.

When they add 4G HSPA+ will it be strong enough to fill that gap or does MTS or Rogers still have to build another tower in the future to give that coverage.

As this seems like a conversion/replacement of the old CDMA gear with HSPA gear the coverage is likely very similar. If the service expansion included LTE then there might be hope as that would be adding additional frequencies.

CoryB, HSPA isn't necessarily a replacement for CDMA. The 2 networks will coexist, just as they do in the rest of Manitoba.

I don't know if they will just mount the HSPA+ gear on the same towers as the CDMA or if they have to do a lot of re-engineering to get adequate coverage.

I was just thinking over lunch that there is a MTS tower about 7 KM n/e of Piney that I think was used by the CBC for their old analog TV service before it shut down in 2012.

I wonder if they might be using that one for the new HSAP service? If so that would fill in the coverage gap somewhat.

From MTS's Facebook page on July 14/14

As part of our continued commitment to offering Manitobans the best coverage across all of our Wireless technologies, we’re pleased to announce the rollout of 4G LTE service to Swan River. Residents and visitors will now be able to experience faster-than-ever download and upload speeds on the latest LTE-enabled wireless devices.

Was anybody at Dauphin Countryfest or the Folk Festival and notice an improvement in MTS Service?

Apparently MTS has put in permanent small cell sites in these locations to improve service.

I'm surprised that microcells aren't more widespread by now. I thought they've been out for a while? Is it cost? I get so frustrated whenever I'm in certain parts of my city that have terrible coverage. I hope the new My Network app from MTS is there to help determine where they plan on upgrading or installing microcells or something to remedy this situation.

I realized last night that MTS was a sponsor of both the Dauphin Country Fest and the Winnipeg Folk Festival so that's why there was probably a Microcell at both locations.
