There is a round 9 pin DIN jack next to the HDMI jack on the Arris where the adapter plugs into...the other end of the adapter has 6 RCA jacks for component, composite and audio.
If you use only HDMI for the Slingbox you run into HDCP issues...that why you need to use component connection.

Jaygeetee, thanks again for the response, this has been a great help and I think I've got it now.

Just wanted to add: I had success setting up a Slingbox 500 with a VIP2502 today. I could not get the web setup to work at all anymore - r/slingbox has other people complaining about that too. But the on-device setup with remote control worked. I told Slingbox it was a VIP2202 receiver and that seems to work fine enough. The remote image on the tablet app looks different but every button seems to work.

The device was previously wired to a Bell Satellite PVR on HDMI. I could see that HDMI was blocked on the Fibe receiver because of HDCP. So I tried by component and set it up a second time, and that worked. 1080i looks better than 720p. 1080p does not work.

Oddly enough, when I disconnected HDMI, streaming the box resulted in a weird message of low/no video signal, planted directly in the middle of a perfectly good looking video stream. So I reconnected HDMI just to get the message to go away.
