Wink Scatter Forager - wide pattern bi-directional "Slot" antenna

Here's something interesting to try for attic or rooftop use: (image copyright jmsdigital 2010)



I've been playing with these for a while and they are surprisingly effective for general wide bi-directional reception.

Note: the grid showing on this sketch is not to 1" scale, it's more or less 3/4" per box. The dimensions shown should work out on 1"x 1" mesh.

Must be a Slot antenna.

Yes, thanks to the inspirations of Alan Blumlein in 1938. The basic working principal is that the sheet is the ground plane and the hole is actually the working antenna. The difference in this application is that the mesh [call it the reflector or ground plane] helps to gather/integrate multipath signals.

Aperture antenna [aka: slot, free field antennas] designs are widely used by NASA for radar, communications, satellite, ground stations, etc. In theory, we should be able to use a single panel and make one aperture for VHF 7-13 and another aperture for 14-51. But, that doesn't work in the real world. In my design the ground plane mesh is dimensioned for VHF-Hi reception and the aperture is set to recieve UHF

Interesting OTA Canuck! What dimensions would you suggest for receiving only real channel 8? I have some spare 1x1 screen that is 24" wide by 7 feet long. It would be easiest to try with a 32" wide by 24" tall screen. Any need to cut out the slot if going for vhf only? Our local ch 8 is very strong and has a margin to dropout of 20 dB with a balun attached to coax and lying on the roof. In contrast, a m-4 with proper size screen has a margin to dropout of ~50 dB.

It would be interesting if someone models this, to see how it performs in theory. I wonder if it would work with 1x2" grid. I have some of that still...but it will have to wait until the temps are cooler before I travel back up into the attic again.

The aperture is needed, otherwise you'd just have a flat piece of material with no electro magnetic field reference points.

I made one with an old 4221 reflector 1'x 2' mesh:
[It looks like an old style 4221 with no wisker elements]

I modified the outside height dimensions to 28" high [for VHF-Hi range]
I modified the outside width to 20" [for optimum scatter capture]

The hole size is vertical cut into the center of the screen mesh:
4" wide x 14" tall [7" above & below the balun feed point]

Note: 16" high slot would give more range into the VHF-Hi, but at a cost to the upper UHF

Tip: I left the wire mesh stubs at the center for balun connection points.

Note: The screen mesh must not be electrically bonded to the mounting mast.

This one seems to do as well as the old 4221, but with a wider beamwidth contour and it's bi-directional.
This design pretty well serves as a 7-51 range antenna with performance similar to a 4221.


Reception RF freq sampling:
I get analog VHF 5, 6, 9, 11, 13 strong & up to analog UHF 19, 47 strong but analog 57 is weak
I get digital VHF 7.1, 12.1 & digital UHF 14.1, 50.1 all @ 100%

This seems to be my current procrastination method of choice. Unfortunately these wire mesh models chew up computational resources like nobody's business.

Here's a model for an antenna that's an even increment of the mesh size, so 32"x14", with a 4"x12" hole cut out of the center. I'll work up a model that works for odd heights like the above later. Unfortunately, NEC says that this while this model has decent SWR over UHF, it's not blessed with positive gain. People with more computational patience may find variations on the antenna with this template, though. I release it to the public domain.

The one that I posted in the OP is intended for someone,.. say, someone like my shop that is surrounded by a bunch of trees that block line of sight. The forager does just what is the name suggests, it forages whatever scattered signals are bouncing around within the area and attempts to gather and buffer the information together within the aperture. No great raw gain is required for the purpose of this signal scavenger.

I Built A Slot Antenna

I have constructed a slot antenna based on the image below. I used a piece of 4 inch dryer duct that worked nicely and it is quite directional also. My slot is 11" x 2" for UHF frequencies.



I can post a picture of my antenna if interested.

Gain wise, modeling shows its way below the CM4221. Raw Gain on it is from 5.12 dbi 2.9 SWR at 470 mhz to 8.28 dbi 5.9 SWR at 698 mhz. A linear curve.
A carefully placed reflector behind it should increase the gain. Single slot antennas are fairly low gain. You need many slots, with the corresponding increase in size, to get the high gain that some wifi antennas slot antennas have.

Techno Dweeb: Thank you for the info. on the ATVS slot antenna. I rescaled it for UHF. I used a cardboard tube(2.5" dia.) with Al. foil 20" in length, the slot size 18" by 1/8" attached balun to center. Not very good on VHF-hi, but works well for me on UHF.

In my case, I'm seeking a bi-directional UHF/VHF, to pick up the wide scatter in my reception area, thus the reason you never see reflectors used in my trials. Because of the scatter, the higher gain antennas seem to give me headaches with multipath.

I originally tried 16"x 2" slot in the post#6 test and it seemed to work on UHF but not VHF. When I opened the slot to 4" I had good result for VHF & UHF. But, as 300ohm has shown, opening the slot width for VHF may have comprimised UHF gain.

I think this aperture antenna idea may have significant merit in the OTA world with some creative tuning efforts by this forum community, whether it's made using a tube style or a flat screen style.

The ones shown in the OP & post#6 have merit in my case, because my interest is to organize the multi-direction scatter that I have lurking around my reception area.

On another note of interest: I mounted a dummy Stealth Hawk [no connections] approx 2" above the antenna shown in post#6 but using the SH only as a passive element and it seems to significantly mellow out the signal strengths [mellow meaning no multipath created dropouts or pixelations on any channels]. So this may indicate that passive elements may be place above or below such as the Narods that were designed to do with the GH antennas.

Why is the feed point 1/3 off center?

Would the feed point be 300 ohm?

What is the difference between using 50ohm or 75ohm at the feed point?
