Official 2016 F1 Discussion Thread - See Post 1

This will be the official 2016 F1 discussion thread.

Here's what we expect for 2016. (updated as required)

Since TSN now has 5 channels, you'll have to check what they're doing since previous "patterns" may no longer hold. Due to changes in broadcast rights discussed at the end of the 2015 thread, we'll have to wait to find out exactly which feed(s) we'll be getting, etc.

TSN2, and/or other TSN for Friday Practice (FP2)

TSN2, and/or other TSN for Saturday Qualifying

TSN4, and/or other TSN for the race on Sunday

TSN1-5 sometimes air the the above events "tape"-delayed later in the day - I often record these in case the original goes long or has issues. There may be another tape-delay later in the week.

Websites of interest:

Formula 1® (new look)

TSN F1 Schedule: 2016 Formula One Racing on TSN - Article - TSN

Canada and US (and some other) GPs may air on CTV/2 &/or NBC (to be confirmed as the time grows nearer)

http://www.digitalhome.ca/forum/160-...-post-1-a.html

Recording Tips I always add several hours to a race recording, in case of rain delays, etc. If available, I always set the PVR to record the Replay later in the day or week, just in case. For other live sports events, like qualifying you need to add time to your recording based on experience and how badly you would miss the end of the programme - for example, I wouldn't care as much about missing the end of practice, but I would miss the end of qualifying, or the race. Qualifying almost always goes slightly longer than the IPG (on Rogers) indicates.

Streaming - we do not allow discussion of illegal streaming sites.

Season starts with the Australia March 18th Practice.

It is going to be interesting to see who C4 brings in as a team, and what kind of package that they have.

The most interesting part is that C4 has only the UK rights for 10 races (same as BBC), but BBC had contracts with other countries to provide commentary (not sure if TSN contracted BBC, or just had a choice and picked the BBC team from FOM). Will C4 have a full broadcast for all the races even though they are not showing them all in the UK? This would not make sense to them when a highlight package can be put together in a studio.

As well, the BBC radio team is probably still under contract as they have retained the radio rights - therefore Lee Mckenzie, Allan McNish, and James Allen probably will not be moving to C4. James also does coverage for Fox/10 in Australia.

Ben Edwards will probably move the C4 (just a guess) as he has limited other commitments to BBC. The rest of the team may be gone - Coulthard (cost), Suzi Perry (rumoured to move to Top Gear), and Eddie Jordan (C4 may not want him and may pull in another pundit.

That just leaves us with NBC and SKY as the only full-season broadcast teams that TSN has relationships with, and unfortunately I believe TSN will be leaning towards NBC's team.

All speculation, but we will probably find out with the P2 session in Australia who TSN picks - I am sure they are not going to make an announcement.

I'm not sure what you mean since TSN has never 'had a relationship' with ether of those broadcasters (for F1). I wish they had a relationship with Sky. I would love to have their coverage.

^^ Exactly. TSN just hijacks someone's feed a couple hours a week. If they had a "relationship", they would be using guys from Sky, BBC, etc. on Sportscentre.

Coulthard has signed on with Channel 4, as well he owns part of the production company that will produce the broadcasts:

As for the relationship between TSN/Bell and NBC or SKY, I was referring to the other programming outside of F1 they carry. I've only seen a few SKY programs on TSN (darts mostly, some billiards) but NBC Universal supplies a lot of programming to Bell Globemedia including TSN.

Notice on the TSN site for schedule it lists NBCSN and NBC. Wonder if TSN will be getting the feed from them? I hope not.

I'm hoping not - the schedule looks like it was plucked from STATS LLC and maybe just a lazy cut 'n paste by someone at TSN (fingers crossed!).

C4 announced their lineup of races today as well - I have a feeling that they won't be broadcasting from every race, only leaving SKY as the only option vs. NBC for TSN to pick up this year...or would TSN do something odd like use the BBC Radio 5 broadcast over the FOM video feed like they have done for P2 the last couple years?

The craziest speculation I read on another board someone thinks that Villeneuve, Gerald Donaldson, and a studio host from TSN may be the broadcast team doing commentary from a studio...yikes! I would take NBC any day over that option...

I guess we will find out St. Patrick's Day weekend...

Here are the ones Channel 4 are showing;

Quote:
Channel 4 has announced Bahrain, Spain, Europe (Azerbaijan), Britain, Hungary, Belgium, Italy, Malaysia, Mexico and Abu Dhabi as its live broadcasts. There will be no advertisement breaks during the races.

For the remaining 11 grands prix Channel 4 will show a comprehensive highlights package.
I like the fact there will not be commercials, bet there is on TSN though, most likely they will go picture in picture.

And of course, a week ago Channel 4 confirmed former F1 racer David Coulthard had become the first member of its commentary team. As far as I know, the rest will be announced soon.

Ewww. That would really really suck. Lots of people like 'the three amigos' and I think they are ok (except for Hobbs and Matchet saying 'whoa whoa whoa whoa' at the same time whenever anything happens), but the commercial breaks are so plentiful as to make it virtually unwatchable. Plus, they are just sitting in a studio in charlotte watching the feed just like we are.

Please don't let that be true! I'm gonna go kill myself if that's true.

Just trying to remove that damn setup progress bar.

If TSN chooses NBC, I'm sure half of 200,000 or so viewers watching in Canada would pay for an app that will let you know when anyone else but Will Buxton is talking or the driver's radio is on so you can mute your TV.

I wonder how much NBC pays Buxton? He seems to be everywhere (BBC Radio 5, Sky, and announcer for GP2, plus various written articles) that he needs to supplement his NBC income...

Villeneuve just quit his Formula E ride today - hopefully TSN isn't planning for him and Donaldson to be the announcers this year...thought it was a wild rumour when I mentioned it earlier, but maybe Villeneuve needs the cash...
