HDVD format

I was at a Chinese Mall today, and some electronics merchants have some DVD players that can play HDVD format. Anyone know what HDVD format is?

Chinese Stuff?

(I wonder whether that's a poor translation for "Winged Migration"? (Yes it was done WW with a lot of French input, but it wasn't called Travelling Birds). I wonder if it's Pirated stuff.

There are of course...

But can only be played on a computer or DVD player with internet connection...

57: thanks for the link. Does it mean that these dvd players can actually play a regular dvd and yet produce a better quality output,i.e.,1080i? If true, would it be a better player than the upconvert units with Farouja chip? Also, does it mean that the HD DVD titles (in your link) are all MPEG4 format? (There are tons of these HDVD titles, most of them Chinese, like hero, house of flying dagger on sale as well).

HVD is a red laser High Definition format developed in Asia ( China , I think). You need a DVD player which supports this format, and of course HVD titles ( most are chinese movies). Don't expect that the format will get any foothold in North America, but may become popular in China and other Asian countries ( VCD was very popular there but almost not used in America). You can find here a review for such player:

Don't confuse this format with Holographic Versatile Disc which also stands as HVD.

Adit: thanks for the info and link. I am interested in the NeuNeo HVD208's ability to upscale regular DVD's, but I will have to find a store in GTA that has a liberal return policy.

BTW, NeuNeo web site list the spec as HDCD compatible. So, are HVD and HDCD loose terms for the Chinese format?

Yes, I remember there is, and in fact we may be speaking about the same stuff here.I don't think Chinese developed 2 different High Definition formats. Probably is just some confusion about naming here.

Anyway what I like about this player is:

"
HDCP is not required for playing copyright DVD title in high definition mode.
"

This shows the Chinese oppinion about DRM...
