That's strange. I use the UHF/Combined input with a combo antenna and get boosted Uhf and Vhf from it pretty well. Make sure the switch inside is on Combined too. VHF digital signals especially hate things in the way so if your preamp was amplifying a real bad ghost or something that could cause this issue. If there is a building in the vicinity aim for it or find another good nearby reflection off another building or large solid structure if any.

For the hell of it a couple months ago I tried my original 4228 at about 20 feet up from the ground on the roof sitting in an upright position with trees in the way and got WJBK FOX2 with good strength with my CM7778 on the combined input.

"The switch on the inside?"

Oops, I just now saw that you have a CM7775 indicated in your Sig line. So yes what you are doing would be necessary to pick up WJBK as a CM7775 has zero support for VHF band. Forgive me... my mistake. BUT if you upgraded to a CM7777/CM7778 you might have a much better signal where then you will get good VHF amplification versus none at all.

Fun stuff, one of these nights i might just sit back and watch instead of channel hunting
Watch out, LOL this becomes seriously addictive when tropo gets going good. Had my new TV since Jan '09 and the remote control face and ch up/dn buttons in particular are worn pretty bad already

I'm currently running a combo antennacraft hbu33... and wish I had spent a few extra dollars on the hbu 44 model.

...and now there's Model HBU55! The biggest and best High-Band VHF and UHF.
And if you want to see something different check out the Antennas Direct ClearStream 5.

@Nester
Haha yeah i have seen the HBU55 model as well, but its a monster... the whole idea behind designing the VHF-HI/UHF antennas it to keep the size down.... while all 3 models are relatively narrow as you don't need the wide VHF dipoles anymore for VHF-low, that HBU-55 model is 12 feet long! (145")

I thought the 44 model at just over 10 feet long (116") was about my limit for what i want on my house LOL. The 33 model that I have up now looks rather discreet for an antenna at 7 feet long.... but the thought of getting more channels makes me care less about the looks!

I have seen that clearstream 5... a loop design primarly for vhf.

Me too
Some enhancement not seen in a good long while.
*Love the warmth and what it brings..

I also have much improved Cleveland area strength tonight + a couple rarely seen Akron and area channels
WEWS 5-1 | 10/10
WKYC 3-1,2 | 7/10
WUAB 43-1 (battling WFUM) | 2/10
WVIZ 25-1 PBS Ideastream | 2/10 Rare but none the less there.
WJW 8-1 FOX | 5-7/10 (Jumpy)
Akron:
WEAO 49-1,2,3,4 Western Reserve PBS | 10/10
WVPX 23-1,2,3,4 ION | 8-10/10

Exception: WADL-DT Mt. Clemens is canceled out big time again by WDLI-DT Akron (39) resulting in nothing.

Other brief glimses.. WLMB 40-1, WLNS 6-1

hmmm...signals are taking a dump again since the cold north wind hit this afternoon. Anybody else still getting those 70+ mile channels with good strength still? Last night was pretty good though, could have a bit more fun within the next week according to the dx forecast.

Phil81,

Here in Brantford, it's really taking a dump tonight. Usually, Buffalo is quite strong but it's extremely weak right now (as in...can't get it period!)

Big difference from the last couple of days when things were booming. Surprisingly Erie, PA is coming in strong. Maybe point your antenna that way.

i've managed to hold on to WPXD 31, which usually becomes unavailable in cold weather... it's at roughly 55 miles for me, and coming in on the side of my already-thin antenna... there's no real "side" or "side lobes" on this small thing and i still get the station!

After much hesitation and lack of time, I finally wanted to try something more drastic before winter in getting Cleveland more often at just under 70 miles to the southeast of me. On the current 8 month old Winegard rooftop combo antenna+CM7778 at 26 ft AGL, the signals from there vary from fair to quite poor or even none at all. A neighbours house, a small hill, and thick evergreen trees in that direction I think are the cause of the poor and intermittent signal issues.

A few months ago I climbed the pine tree in question and used a hand saw to cut a few branches in a good open spot so the antenna would have a better view and would fit close to the trunk. A copper ground wire was run up side the tree with steel U hooks from a copper ground pipe at the tree base to the future antenna location. Last week I started running the coax from the house to a detached garage very close by and then on and up the tree to near where the antenna was going to go. Then last Thu in descent weather I securely tied my original 4228, and a CM7778 preamplifier up in the tree with some rope close to 40 feet off the ground tilted slightly back facing to the southeast. (aiming for tops of evergreen trees within 400 ft) The ground wire is attached to the bottom mast clamp on the antenna. So far it is hard to tell what kind of everyday reception to expect as there has been erratic weather and tropo conditions the last few days. The antenna is tied at 4 points to thick branches close to the trunk of the tree so it barely moves in the wind. There is still a little multipath but it's proving to be much more reliable than my current rooftop antenna. The 4228 is not pointing at Detroit or Toledo so I don't get reliable reception from those places with this setup. *Some Detroit stations are possible with this when the wind is near calm but only a few, and I only get ONE Toledo station (WTOL) from it.

Some pics:

Climbing up there nearly 10 times isn't all that fun. Strong winds are a bit freaky. Didn't use any anti fall protection either. (can't recommend folks do something like this unless your willing to accept the possible risks)

So far I have noticed that I am getting VHF digital channels 8 and 10 from the 4228 pretty good. With my roof combo I never get CBS on RF10 but the 4228 gets it (weak) almost all the time now. FOX on RF8 is also much improved. Almost all of the digital stations are nulled to stop them from travelling over Lake Erie and with this new setup they are now viewable more often, though there are still many times where most or all the Cleveland area stations are flakey or dissapear totally. All are 68+ miles out and are 2Edge even at 40 feet in TVfool

Nice setup Phil! Worth a try indeed.
