CBC & Australian Broadcasting Corp. Agreement

The Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) and Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) today announced a creative and commercial collaboration that will enhance the reach and impact of their content across both countries.

The two national public broadcasters have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to co-develop English-language drama, comedy, factual, children’s and podcast content to maximize the value of their public funding for audiences. The three-year MOU will also provide further opportunities for co-financing and format sales of drama and children’s content.

See the press release for more details.

Some of the better dramas I've watched on CBC the past few years have been from Australia. Hopefully this will provide more of the same.

Wish more content from Australia was available. Both the Australian ABC and SBS have produced some excellent documentaries over the last several years that I have really enjoyed. Hope this agreement will make some of this programming easier to find in Canada.

It's surprising how many Canadian shows end up on the air in Australia, and the lack of Australian programming on Canadian TV. Some channels in Australia (Lifestyle for example) are at least half Canadian content.

Hope this is good news for both countries - a lot of good programming gets stuck behind borders without good distribution.

Me too, and I also wish a Canadian company would make a deal with a provider from the UK and from France.

We have many multi-cultural channels from other countries, why we can't get channels from Australia, the UK and France?...

There are a number of Canadian stations that license and air programming from British and French networks. In addition, PBS and TVO air a lot of British programming. It's not difficult to find. It's also possible to stream British and French programming and stations over the internet though many stations are geo-blocked.

Since the rights to much of the British and French programming worth watching is licensed by Canadian broadcasters, the carriage of originating channels is untenable. I'm not sure most people would want to pay the high cost of other ethnic channels for stations from the UK or French channels either.

SuperChannel once carried a few Australian shows and, as noted, I've seen some on CBC the last couple of years.
