So do I read this news release
CHCH-TV implements major restructuring to remain on the air -- HAMILTON, ON, Dec. 11, 2015
...correctly, in that "Channel 11 L.P." was a third-party supplier of local news, that has gone bankrupt, but the station itself and Channel Zero are unaffected? That's an odd arrangement.

CHCH

Incredibly sad news about CHCH. The station had been doing such a great job with news programming.

Terrible news. I watch Sportsline every weekday at 5pm to keep informed about everything sports. Right now they're showing a repeat of 20/20 and a scrolling message appeared at the bottom of the screen saying Sportsline was cancelled (whether that means completely cancelled or just cancelled for today, I don't know). I also enjoyed their movies, news and other programs.

CHCH TV Hamilton ch 11 is bankrupt? I was looking for another antenna to gang with my DB4e, in order to get their broadcasts. Damn, I hope they stay solvent.

We need more not less OTA channels.

Unhappy

Sigh, this'll just give Bell Media perfect fodder to craft announcements that all CTV local stations are in a doomed industry and therefore, must be shutdown on the eve of CRTC license renewals next year. BCE executives are probably high-fiving now that they can point and say "see? told ya so!" after the CHCH all-local-news-all-day experiment comes to an end.

From what I have read, only Morning Live and the weekday 6 and 11 newscasts remain. Everything else has been cancelled.

Too much staff??

I was looking at the Personalities page earlier today and realized CHCH seemed to be way overstaffed compared to other stations. Here in Ottawa, CTV Ottawa has only one "weather specialist" but CHCH has 4 or 5! CTV Ottawa only has one sportscaster now while CHCH has at least 6. Here in Ottawa some TV anchors now have to read news on the radio. I really don't think CHCH could survive with that amount of staff.

On another note, it appears that the Alvinston transmitter (51-1) has been shut down. I'm not seeing any signal from that transmitter.

Niagara gets stiffed if CHCH goes under

For at least 2 decades, groups in the Niagara Peninsula of Ontario have applied to the CRTC for a TV station licence, claiming that there is a real void in local news coverage for the area, sandwiched as it is between the big Buffalo and Toronto media stations. The CRTC always rejected them, always calling CHCH forward to increase/augment their Niagara Peninsula coverage, which they always attempted as best they could.

If CHCH goes under, I would expect new/renewed TV station licence applications in the Niagara (and probably the Hamilton) areas following up the approaches of the previous license applications.

Of course the CHCH situation might dissuade some, but there are other independent stations in Canada still making a go of it.

I don't understand why Channel Zero doesn't convert CHCH to a cable only station. I can't imagine any of their primetime programming makes that much money that they need to continue OTA broadcasting for simsub revenue. I would think that fee for carriage would fix a lot of their financial issues. Heck they could probably just become a news only operation under an ad/carriage fee revenue system.

This isn't the doom and gloom (or the beginning of the end for CHCH as you said on another forum).

There's no need to abandon a valuable OTA license especially since it would open it up for a new competitor to apply to the CRTC.

Besides Niagara tried an all news cable only station and it failed miserably.

Channel Zero will still be providing MORE news coverage than is required by their license and with the CRTC allowing less daytime Canadian requirements this opens up a wide array of cheaper U.S. daytime programming to acquire compared to what prime time programming costs.

OTA Free: CBC, CTV, CHCH, PBS, PBS World, TVO, WNLO, Global, OMNI1, CityTV, OMNI2.
Premium TV: R2 DVDs (Cheaper)
