CHCH showcased its upcoming fall line up in front of potential advertising clients this morning. It was also part of a new initiative that brings independent stations from across the country together in order to attract larger national brands.

“We’re bringing a new show called Right this Minute. Imagine up to date, the most viral videos online brought to you in a half hour show brought to you every single day.” Jennifer Chen, Channel Zero.
I watched the video and the montage of shows made it look like most shows are coming back except perhaps Nashville, which was cancelled by ABC, but recently picked up by CMT (U.S.)

The CRTC is also allocating more funding for local news starting September 2017. See this thread:

One thing I have to say positive about CHCH is their website is excellent compared to other major Canadian networks for posting news stories.

I cut the cord over a month ago, and one of the channels I can't get and was going to miss was CHCH for the news. For some reason the FCC and CRTC decided to have a channel in Hamilton and Buffalo on the same frequency, cancelling out CHCH for me...

Not only does CHCH have a live feed of the channel (if I am ready to watch TV at 6pm for the news) it has a good video archive that is pretty up to date to catch the stories I would like to watch.

Compared to the poor websites for Global, CTV, and City; CHCH is great - and compares to the CBC for availability of stories.

Hopefully next time they cut costs, they don't cut their webmaster.

CHCH To Bring Back Weekend News Broadcasts

http://www.chch.com/chch-to-bring-ba...ws-broadcasts/

Interesting that they can now afford to bring in a team on the weekend at CHCH starting end of October - must have saved a bunch of money with all the 30-40 year old shows they are starting to show in the next few weeks.

It's more likely that they found advertisers for those shows and now have some income to support new staff. A lot of people like watching 30-40 year old shows.

CHCH to resume weekend news broadcasts

Quote:
"There is a lot of interest from our advertisers," said Channel Zero's vice-president of sales and marketing, Chris Fuoco. "We think it will be financially viable."

Fuoco said the Independent Local News Fund announced earlier this year did not factor into the decision. That $20-million-per-year incentive funding, to be shared among 18 communities, won't come into effect until September of next year.
Statement from union (Unifor M1 Hamilton):

Regarding weekend news announcement

Quote:
While we are encouraged that weekend newscasts are returning to CHCH TV, Unifor Canada and Unifor M1 Hamilton continue to fight for the seniority & severance rights for those affected by the cuts almost nine months ago as well as the right to represent our sisters and brothers who remained to provide quality local news.

crtc in their decision re. local tv funding last june, said that ota tv stations must broadcast local news 7 days a week..I think that is the reason chch tv is bringing back weekend news..they have to.

I'm sure the local funding coming into effect next year is a factor, however, I don't think CHCH would be obligated to do 7-day/week newscasts until next September. The primary reason is likely because they are losing far more advertising dollars and viewers to other stations due to not having news on the weekends. I know my parents watch CHCH much less since the cutbacks. I also very rarely watch it these days. CBC, CTV and Global News have way better production value and CBC actually has a pretty decent news website for the Hamilton area.

Despite popular belief; CHCH isn't the only game in town for Hamilton.

They sold the building and CHCH will continue to lease the studios for at least two and a half years while the search continues for a new location.

Unifor reaches deal for CHCH workers
Excerpts from Unifor press release:

Fifteen months after more than 100 staff at Hamilton TV station CHCH lost their jobs with no notice and no severance, Unifor has reached a deal to compensate those workers who lost their employment.

Under today's mediated settlement, the station will pay out $1 million in severance and general damages for workers denied such payments after the December 2015 job cuts, and recognizes Unifor as the sole bargaining agent for the staff currently at CHCH.

Sorry to revive an old thread, but there seemed to be a lot of interest in CHCH's building. Here are excerpts from an October 17 Press Release.

CHCH Finds New Home in Hamilton

Channel Zero, together with Mayor Fred Eisenberger, announced today the acquisition of a new, permanent home for the operations and broadcast facilities of its flagship television station, CHCH-TV. Purchase of the property was completed on Monday, October 15 in Hamilton, kicking off the process of designing and building a new broadcast centre to be located at 4 Innovation Drive in Flamborough. Design and construction of CHCH’s new home will commence in 2019, with operations set to be live by the Spring of 2021.

Once construction is complete, broadcast operations will be relocated to the new facility from the current site at 163 Jackson Street West, with the intention of not interrupting a single live newscast. In addition to a new location and enhanced studio space at Innovation Drive, the development plan also includes the creation of a local news bureau to be located in the heart of downtown Hamilton, placing CHCH-TV reporters in close proximity to City Hall, Municipal Courthouses, the FirstOntario Centre, and other areas of interest.

I for one think CHCH has come a long way since the bankruptcy for local news. The sale of the Jackson Street facility (which was announced several years ago) will even add more $ in the coffers.

If they could just settle the interference in Niagara Region with RF15, I'll be happier - but they have excellent online content (live channel stream, recordings of every newscast).
