I have been following this bankruptcy since it broke last December. It seems Channel Zero is a pretty shady company and has had a history of disfunction. CHCH may have been stabilised somewhat but I can't see it lasting that much longer under Channel Zero ownership.

Randy Jorgenson who previously owned it (and was responsible for the foray into porn) is now charged for selling dubious vacation properties in Honduras (highest murder rate in the world) along with an ex cop who was involved in criminal activity while on the force in Hamilton.

I doubt many of us OTA'ers would be sad to see CHCH gone.

What about them screwing over their employees out of their severance packages by using very disturbing business tactics as it would appear.

I am also curious to know what they consider the programming they air during the day as?

Repeats of 20/20 from years ago, public domain movies, and infomercials in the top left corner with the CP24 style news/weather/traffic surrounding it should not count toward Canadian Content rules or local programming.

I hate to say it, but I expect the channel to be fully dead, unable to resuscitate, in a few months.

The way the business is setup, even if a piece goes under, the full puzzle isn't available now for someone to pick-up and restart/re-imagine a new CHCH. The land(s) are in one business, the building in another, the antennas are with another separate from the studios, the news production is it's own thing...yikes!

Unfortunately that's par for the course with most businesses filing for bankruptcy protection. Is it morally right, no, but legally, yes.

CHCH owner under labour code investigation following bankruptcy - The Globe and Mail

My suspicion with CHCH is this was planned, they know the spectrum auction is coming and are more than happy to squat on their spectrum until the auction and hope they get a windfall. Rogers have several stations that fall in the presumed spectrum allotment auction, RF40, RF44, RF47.

It's too bad VICE went into business with Rogers because they COULD have picked this up dirt cheap, not be tied to any outside influence and offered their very unique programming that would meet Can-Con rules and offer a totally different tv channel (think channel 79 (CITY) in it's early days) while using an OTA and carried cable station to push people for their PREMIUM channel.

Regardless of how this pans out I hope the employees of CHCH get their severance and CHCH's executives that are playing shell games to hide from liability get their comeuppance.

Question

Why do I get the feeling when this is all over and done with, the result will be criminal charges will be brought against some individuals?

I'll BET there will be no charges. This is just typical corporate shenanigans. Case in point, Conrad Black/Argus

I worked for a multinational that did FAR worse and the senior executives walked away richer than Croesus while buying up the carcass for 1¢ to the $.

As despicable as it is it's the law and the only way to change that is by voting for politicians that want to close these loopholes.

I saw it pointed out elsewhere that the building is for sale.

Apparently the CHCH licence expires August 31, 2016.

Thanks for posting the article link - also found some info on CBC:

CHCH television headquarters and historic building up for sale - Latest Hamilton news - CBC Hamilton

It's kind of an odd building inside - however the market is still hot in Hamilton.

I still watch the CHCH 6pm News - it's getting really bad after the first few stories, especially when all the paid stories/content start creeping in. The content during the day and on weekends is horrible - they should probably just re-broadcast Bloomberg segments during those times instead of ancient movies and 10 year old 20/20 episodes.

Whatever they sell the building for, it probably substantially more than the $1 they paid for all the CHCH assets.

It would be interesting to find out if CHCH is bidding on any shows for the fall season - if not, probably the August 31st demise is going to happen.

The ancient movies I don't mind. Some of them feature actors and real films we never see today. Old 20/20s is another matter. The only value of these segments is nostalgia and the sad realization that a very serious issue of a previous decade is still with us today.

Overall as long time fan of CHCH and Ken Soble, I'd sooner see this station closed down than continue in its run down current condition. There is no longer any reason to keep it on the air.

It just shows how sketchy Channel Zero really is. They have created shell companies to protect assets from creditors. Even their transmitter is under a separate shell company. I suppose channel zero might keep CHCH on the air but perhaps anchor it from their Bloomberg studio. Who knows what the plans are. I can't see anyone buying it though so it could very well cease broadcasting.

It's business as usual - CHCH will be holding their fall upfronts for advertisers on June 16.

What exactly would they be announcing on June 16? That they won't be airing anything new? lol
