Bell Media announced today it will soon launch a new video streaming service devoted exclusively to the best content on television. From the company with more than a decade of leadership delivering Canada's most-watched and most-acclaimed television programming across the Pay, Specialty, and Network TV landscapes, the on-demand subscription service, currently code-named "Project Latte", will feature thousands of hours of content representing TV's top premium brands including, it was confirmed today, HBO. With content from all key Hollywood major and independent studios, "Project Latte" does not duplicate existing services, but instead features additive and exclusive programming.

Now available to every TV provider in Canada, "Project Latte" is designed to enhance the value of the subscription television ecosystem. "Project Latte" will therefore be made available to all TV subscribers in the country, pending agreements with participating TV providers, on their traditional set-top box, as well as via mobile apps, the web, and other platforms including game consoles and Smart TVs. Additional details will be announced in the weeks to come.

"We built Project Latte as a complementary service that will delight and amaze viewers with thousands of hours of premium entertainment available on-demand and on the device of their choice," said Kevin Crull, President, Bell Media. "Project Latte addresses a significant gap in the Canadian TV system and allows TV providers to greatly enhance the value they provide to their clients. We are incredibly excited about the potential for this product and how it fits into our overall portfolio of Canada's best television brands and programs."

"If you like TV, you will love Project Latte's program lineup," said Mike Cosentino, Senior Vice-President, Programming, Bell Media. "Our singular focus on TV series, along with our established studio relationships in Hollywood and beyond, means we are uniquely positioned and hyper-focused on delivering the best TV programs to the most-devoted TV lovers. While our extensive HBO deal is a game-changer and instantly makes us a viewer favourite, HBO content comprises only 10% of our planned inventory at launch. Stay tuned as Project Latte's complete lineup is revealed in the weeks to come."

HBO is the first of many world-class content partners announced for "Project Latte", which, further to Bell Media's previously announced agreement, will be the Canadian home of the entire off-air library of HBO's iconic programming catalogue. As confirmed today, "Project Latte" will feature the entire HBO scripted library, featuring some of the most-celebrated television programming of all time. In addition to THE SOPRANOS and SEX AND THE CITY, additional Emmy® and Golden Globe® Award-winning HBO classic series to be available on "Project Latte" include SIX FEET UNDER, BAND OF BROTHERS, CURB YOUR ENTHUSIASM, BIG LOVE, ENTOURAGE, OZ, IN TREATMENT, HUNG, ROME, and DEADWOOD, among others. "Project Latte" will also feature creator David Simon's newly re-mastered version of THE WIRE, which will be presented in HD for the first time.

"Project Latte" will also showcase the complete HBO Films catalogue of nearly 100 titles that have been the recipients of countless Academy®, Golden Globe, Peabody, and Emmy Awards, as well as the Palme d'Or and other film festival accolades. Among the selections are ELEPHANT, AMERICAN SPLENDOUR, BEHIND THE CANDELABRA, GAME CHANGE, TEMPLE GRANDIN, CONSPIRACY, THE GATHERING STORM, THE NORMAL HEART, and GREY GARDENS.

As well, "Project Latte" is the home to more than 150 titles from the HBO Documentaries library, including Academy Award-nominated 4 LITTLE GIRLS, the Emmy and Peabody award-winning WHEN THE LEVEES BROKE: A REQUIEM IN FOUR ACTS, SIX BY SONDHEIM, and the recent festival favourite SEDUCED AND ABANDONED.

Finally, "Project Latte" will exclusively feature HBO's lineup of close to 160 iconic stand-up comedy specials featuring some of the biggest names in comedy of all time, including George Carlin, Robin Williams, Chris Rock, Ellen DeGeneres, Bill Maher, Dennis Miller, Louis C.K., Sarah Silverman, Margaret Cho, and more.

About "Project Latte"
Created for TV lovers and devoted exclusively to television, "Project Latte" is Canada's premium subscription on-demand service, providing the most robust lineup of hit television content in the country. From TV's most-acclaimed dramas and beloved comedies to documentaries, music, and factual programming, "Project Latte" will feature more than 10,000 hours of non-kids TV programming, with more than 350 unique TV titles. Designed to complement traditional television, the video service gives viewers the ability to watch thousands of hours of hit past and present TV series. Available to all TV providers, "Project Latte" will be delivered via set-top box, apps, online, and other platforms. "Project Latte" is from Bell Media, Canada's premier multi-media company.

Project Latte is Cravetv

Craving attention – and profits: Bell enters streaming battle

With the launch of a new video-on-demand service dubbed Cravetv, Bell Media hopes to take on Internet streaming giants while still keeping one foot firmly planted on the side of its traditional television business.

The media division of BCE Inc. will host an event in Toronto on Wednesday [Dec. 3/14] to unveil the features of the new service that will launch by the end of the year and compete with subscription-based offerings from U.S.-based Netflix Inc. and homegrown rival Shomi, a joint venture between Rogers Communications Inc. and Shaw Communications Inc.

But in an interview with The Globe and Mail Monday, Bell Media president Kevin Crull said that unlike Shomi, the library of more than 10,000 hours of television programming on Cravetv will only be available for purchase to customers with a traditional TV subscription.

BCE Trademarks Crave TV Ahead of Streaming Service Debut

BCE Inc. (BCE), Canada’s largest telecommunications company, has registered a series of trademarks using the name “Crave” ahead of the introduction of its new online streaming service.

A numbered corporation registered to a BCE executive, Maria Margiotta, took out trademarks on names including Crave TV, Crave Movies, Crave Sports, Crave News and Crave Kids in October. The trademarks are for “subscription video on demand” services, according to the filings

So instead of being a true competitor to Netflix, this is more of a paid VOD service. I wonder how much stuff will move off free VOD (with subscription to the right channel) to CraveTV.

The only way in which this will be a competitor to Netflix is that they will use their massive profits from others services to buy up the streaming rights to content.

#66 ·
Since this new service will be available to TV subscription customers only, the price of this service should be lower than $8 per month.
Probably around $5 or even for less.

It looks that this service is not so much about competing with Netflix but it is aimed at cord cutters to bring them back to TV subscription service.

exclusive deals seem to be less about bragging rights for the most content, and more about making sure that this content is not available to Netflix.
Exactly. It's also about keeping competitive services such as Google Video and Amazon Prime from entering Canada. Difficulty in obtaining content kept many music streaming services out of Canada for years and still reduce the value of those that do offer their services in Canada. Now we are seeing a similar situation with video streaming services. Companies like Bell and Rogers tied up streaming rights while, until now, didn't offer them to Canadians at competitive rates. (Some were available on PPV at high rental rates.) Due to difficulty in obtaining rights and a loss of customers to Shomi and Latte, Netflix could decide to pull out of Canada. A US based music service I subscribed to several years ago did. It's a pattern of restricting market access to Canadians that is being repeated in yet another format, this time streaming video. In theory, Canada could be a market leader in such industries, as it was in cable TV 50 years ago, but protectionism is killing innovation.

Bell Media Reveals Canadian First-Look Strategy for “Project Latte”

Bell Media announced today a first-look strategy for its subscription on demand video streaming service that will see episodes of original Canadian series premiere on “Project Latte” 24 hours in advance of their network television premieres. The announcement was made as Bell Media revealed the premium Canadian scripted content that will be available on the service, representing the most-acclaimed and most-watched original primetime programming in Canada. It was also confirmed today that CORNER GAS: THE MOVIE will be the first Canadian program to receive a first-look screening on “Project Latte” ahead of its linear television premiere.

The first-look strategy is designed to provide crucial samplings of episodes ahead of their regular network airings, while providing an additional platform to proudly showcase Canada’s independent productions. Series that receive first-look screenings will stack on “Project Latte” for their entire current-season run, which will be immediately complementary to the past-season episodes also on the service.

In 2015, Bell Media original productions SAVING HOPE, MOTIVE, SPUN OUT, and more will receive a first-look premiere on “Project Latte,” becoming the only titles on the service with past and in-season episodes available. The announcement comes as additional drama titles were announced for “Project Latte,” and on the eve of a major announcement tomorrow confirming final details for the service.

“Our first-look execution not only provides terrific value to customers of Project Latte, but represents an additive strategy, delivering a Canadian advantage for our production partners,” said Mike Cosentino, Senior Vice-President, Programming, Bell Media. “It demonstrates pride of place for our original productions and the value they provide. With complete past seasons along with the current, in-season episodes available on the service, it helps build the profile of these series for discovery by even more TV viewers.”

With more than 40 titles comprising nearly 1,000 assets at launch, “Project Latte” will feature more primetime original Canadian television programming than any other similar service. At launch, premium, non-kids Canadian programming on “Project Latte” will total more than 12% of the service’s entire catalogue, with more original content to be added regularly.

Curated to reflect “Project Latte’s” commitment to premium TV programming, Canadian titles announced today represent more than 200 Canadian Screen Award nominations.

Bell and other providers have lost many TV subscription customers in Canada.
To me it looks that this new service has not been created to give more choices to cord cutters but to provide additional service to TV subscription customers to retan them and possibly attract new customers.

#74 ·
It's an extra cost item, similar to creating several new channels with VOD and putting them in an $8.99 theme pack. Multiply that by two to get both Shomi and CraveTV. Those 20,000 hours of programming didn't appear out of nowhere. Much of that programming would have previously been syndicated and sold to existing channels but it's now an extra cost item. For example, the off air HBO programming would have been rerun occasionally and included as a VOD bonus for existing HBO customers. A full TV package in Canada just went up by almost $18 while the quality and choice of programming on existing TV channels and BDU subscriptions just went down. I know Bell wants to spin CraveTV as an exciting new feature but is it really? It also looks like a bunch of existing programming packaged in a new, expensive suit.

I just watched a segment on BNN.
"This service offers a twist on streaming service....it is only offered to existing TV subscribers....not only Bell Subscribers....ALL TV subscribers. Telus has already signed an access contract for their subscribers"

I paraphrase. I wonder how likely Rogers will allow access since they have a competing Shomi, unlikely.

Bell said the service will be ad-free, although they may have some pre-roll promos for other CraveTV content before the program starts.

They have the capability to carry third-party commercials, but they don't have any plans to do so at the present time and they will never insert commercials into the middle of a program.

They didn't say anything about fast forward, etc., but they have no reason to restrict it since there won't be any commercials.

If anyone wants to watch the full press conference, including the Q&A:

Note: The press conference is split into segments and there are ads between each segment.

They also said they plan to double the amount of content over the next 12 months.

65% of the content is exclusive
